Depending on the level of weird you can take, you might appreciate some of the Errol Morris Documentaries like Gates of Heaven (it's about the pet cemetery business) and Vernon, FL (it's about these random old guys in a little Florida town...really bizarre, if only because I know people just like 'em). On the less weird side he also did The Thin Blue Line (sadly, no relation to the BBC series with Rowan Atkinson) which follows the story of a murder here in Dallas in which it appears the wrong guy is probably in jail--it's a good story, but more telling is the accuracy in showing how "justice" was dispensed in Dallas, Texas at that time (and, especially after the judicial turnover in our last election, probably will be now....assuming it ever improved).
I also really like what I've seen of David Southerland's work. He did a multi-part story on two boys in rural Appalachian Kentucky. It's on DVD, but if you've got a fast connection, you can watch it online. He had another one that Frontline aired called "The Farmers Wife" but I've

I swear to you, it just so happens that some of the most widely released recent documentaries happen to feature birds. There may be a tiny bit of bias on my part, but really, they've just been hot recently.
What can I say? Birds are charismatic megafauna. It sells.
