RELATIONSHIPS
game of fate [ canon ]
Sakura , Masume
{ no journal }
The Witch of Virtues
Masume Sakura is arguably the most important person in Satou's life. Their relationship illustrates many of Satou's strengths and flaws as a character, and as a big sister, as well as most all of her values.
Initially, Satou is not very fond of Masume. She is forced to move to Japan for the sake of her young cousin-now-adoptive-sister and loses everything she was working towards before; her friends, her parents' attention and her status as a "smart & talented child" are all " lost ". Satou hates Masume for "taking" these from her and treats her younger sister cruelly as a result.
That does not last forever. Masume slowly grows on Satou, proving to be too kind of a person to hate and accidentally making Satou aware of how awful she is by being someone to compare herself to. It's because of Masume that Satou decides to begin actively trying to be a different person. She begins to honestly love her younger sister as well, demonstrating her value for family.
However, Masume continues to give Satou reason to demonstrate her need for attention and praise. Satou begins magic so that she can pursue a talent while she is "better" than her sister. But later when the sisters realize they've lost everything in exchange for their reckless magic Satou changes her goal from praise to making things up to her younger sister.
Satou continues to adore Masume throughout the series. Despite the initial jealousy, which still flares up on occasion, Masume is all Satou feels she has left. She would throw away anything and everything for the sake of her darling sister. Even while they're apart for over three years Satou continues to value her sister's happiness and safety above all else.

Takamachi, Touka
{
priceoffriends }
Witch of Peach Blossoms
Touka is one of Satou's dear friends from the days of the Title Contest. They met under somewhat strange circumstances, with Touka being framed as a scapegoat and used as a mana well, but she was quickly rescued by Dumbtou. Since then, they've been the best of friends. Touka may be younger than Satou but their relationship is more like peers than a senior and junior. It was Touka who located Satou years later, when the Witch of Sins was convinced the world had forgotten her, and helped inspire Satou to reconnect with her other friends. Touka continues to be very supportive and helpful to Satou and has yet to forget her even once, something Satou finds very encouraging.
Mikale Godono
{
shadowsher }
Shadow Knight of Sin
Mikale and Satou's relationship has gone up and down more than any other. It's actually really unhealthy from a logical standpoint. But their bond highlights a lot of personality traits in Satou and is one of the strongest that she forms.
They met first when Satou was seven; she showed him her usual stupid kindness and quickly befriended him, even though he had a reputation for being a bad kid. It could even be said that the two of them had a playground romance going.
But then she left him. Years later, when she was twelve, Satou met Mikale again and he became her first honest enemy. In fact, Mikale is the only character in the entire series that Satou ever forms an active dislike for at any point. It could have a lot to do with how he flipped her skirt and flirted endlessly with her though. However, Satou does eventually begin to recognize him as the boy from her childhood and becomes more persistent in befriending him.
Their friendship just suffers a lot from cruel twists of fate, forcing Mikale to betray her on numerous occasions. For a large section of her canon he is even contracted to kill her and consistently attacks her. But every time he has even the slightest change in resolve she gladly accepts him as her friend again. At one point she even forcefully initiates a link with him, declaring that she wants to keep him by her side even if he wants to leave.
Mikale is one of the few people that Satou shows her true dark nature to. She trusts him more blindly than anyone else. Their relationship highlights Satou's secret longing to be cared for and to be loved and how she tries to pretend it isn't there; he tells her he loves her constantly and she rejects his advances half-heartedly. Near the very end of their series, when Mikale figures out Satou is the Samantha he's been looking for, he ends her internal battle between her true self and who she wants to be by assuring her he loves her and all of her faults.
BUT THEY DON'T ACTUALLY BECOME A COUPLE? Despite all of that gushy gushy nonsense, Satou and Mikale don't ever start dating. But that's not to say she doesn't like him! Her bond with Mikale also illustrates how protective she is as Satou comes down h a r d on the people who led him to suffer so much. She's very gentle with their relationship and lets Mikale protect her openingly while she quietly breaks the fingers of anyone who even thinks about making him sad.
Shugo Yumeno
{
protectedknight }
Golden Knight of Sin
Shugo Yumeno is Satou's canon love interest, and for some fairly decent reasons. They've spent the years building a reverse princess&knight relationship, though that does not mean to say that Shugo has never saved Satou.
They initially meet at the very start of the written series, with Satou rescuing Shugo from a witch who is after his life. She opens his eyes to many things he was missing that she herself had; friendship and magic being the top two. When they part ways they part with a promise: That they'll meet again someday and Shugo will be her knight.
That promise is kept. Three years later Satou returns to Shugo's hometown and ends up meeting him again. While he is not nearly experienced enough in magic to protect her properly, Satou accepts Shugo as her knight and begins training him. Her methods of training Shugo show a lot of Satou's changing attitudes and what she values.
Most important is her decision to have Shugo learn only how to defend himself. She purposefully leaves out all training related to offensive combat so that Shugo can never hurt or kill anyone with his magic. She goes out of her way throughout their days together to protect and shelter Shugo from the cruel realities of the world, completely determined to protect his innocent hopes. This means going out behind his back and taking down enemies that would have otherwise ruined his "everyone can be good" belief system.
Satou's relationship with Shugo shows that she acknowledges that this naive way of thinking is not reality, but she wants him to live believing the lie that it is true.
Before Shugo's eventual death Satou begins to feel feelings passed just her generic friendzoned love and begins to comprehend the possibility of having romantic feelings. These hopes are smashed by his death, which is brought about by her own hands. After Shugo dies Satou finally realizes that it was cruel of her to lie to him and pretend the world was a good place. Satou voices that her greatest regret becomes that she never taught him to defend himself and therefore never gave him the chance to kill her rather than be killed, but Shugo denies it and saves her faith by admitting he knew it was a lie and wanted to keep believing. In this way, more than anything, Shugo saves Satou from what would have otherwise been the ultimate soul-crushing despair for her.
