Summary: Remus talks in his sleep.
Warnings: None
Notes: I got the idea for this while listening to the Avenue Q soundtrack, specifically the song called "Fantasies Come True". Feedback would be love.
When he heard Sirius mutter in his ear at breakfast, Remus almost choked on his eggs. After he cleared his windpipe of the offending yellow substance, he coughed once more and blinked over at the dark-haired boy. “Wh-what did you say?” he asked.
“I said you were talking in your sleep again,” Sirius replied matter-of-factly before taking a sip of his pumpkin juice.
Remus suddenly became interested in swirling the rest of his scrambled eggs around on his plate with his fork. “And, what did I say exactly?” he asked hesitantly, unsure if he even wanted to know what he had said. Godric only knew what he said in his sleep. Godric, and it seemed that Sirius did now too.
Sirius turned to fully face Remus then, his gray eyes twinkling, and he smirked as he set his glass down on the table. “Ask me again later,” he replied in a secretive manner. After receiving a confused look from the Prefect, Sirius quickly added, “I’ll tell you later,” before winking and turning back to his breakfast.
Remus worried all day long about what he could have possibly said last night in his sleep that was too important to not repeat at breakfast. He came to the conclusion that it must have been something horribly embarrassing or else Sirius would have blurted it out that morning.
Each time there was a break in between their classes, Remus would ask Sirius what it was he had said in his sleep the night before, and each time he asked, Sirius would refuse to answer. The same routine followed at lunch, dinner, and each time they went to the loo.
The time finally came when the two were alone in their dorm room for the night, their roommates socializing down in the common room. Remus sat on his bed and turned toward Sirius, who was lounging on the bed next to his. “Sirius, what did I say?” he asked suddenly after a long pause.
Sirius knew to what Remus was referring, but he had already decided to feign innocence, if only to get the other boy more worked up. “Why, Moony, whatever do you mean?” he asked, his eyes wide before he batted his lashes and grinned wildly.
Without warning, Remus lunged at Sirius, pinning him down to the bed and sitting on his legs so the dark-haired boy couldn’t get away. “You know full well what I mean, Sirius Black!” he barked exasperatedly, his voice rising in pitch. He released his hold on the other’s arms, and sat back, causing Sirius to wince in pain as Remus shifted more of his weight onto his legs.
Sirius had only been joking in the first place, and he knew he couldn’t win with Remus sitting on top of him like he was, so he decided to give in, but not before hamming it up for show. “Okay, okay,” Sirius chuckled, holding his hands out in front of him in surrender. “First, you were sleeping…like this!” He splayed his arms out and letting his held loll to one side. “Then, you were snoring and Godric, do you snore!” he laughed.
“Sirius, if you don’t tell me, I’ll-” Remus started, but stopped suddenly when he realized that he didn’t know what he would do if Sirius didn’t tell him. “Come on!” he pleaded, his eyes going wide and his brow furrowing.
“Fine, fine…you drama queen!” he laughed, knowing he shouldn’t be one to talk. Sirius then closed his eyes and slowed down his breathing, imitating sleep. “You were asleep, gone to bed early, and luckily I was the only one in the room at the time…” He trailed off and opened one eye to see Remus giving him a look that was a cross between a dog waiting to be fed and someone who would have no qualms reverting to Veritaserum in order to get what he wanted.
Sirius then squeezed his eye shut again and slowed his breathing down once more. He played his act up for several more silent, tense moments before he finally let out in a whispered moan, “I love you too, Remus.”
Remus started at the confession, and for a moment he didn’t even breathe as he focused on the newest piece of information which Sirius had just given him. He was speechless, but after a short while, he finally found his voice, but it was hoarse and hesitant as he asked, “What?”
Lying still underneath him, Sirius squirmed and opened up his eyes, turning to gaze directly up at Remus. “That’s what you said,” he stated with a short nod. “Well, you didn’t say you loved yourself…you told me you loved me…in your sleep.”
It took a longer moment still for the words to sink in with Remus. The smartest of the bunch, he was sharp-witted and could easily think on his feet, most of the time. There were the occasions when he was thrown off his feet and had to take some time to pick himself up and brush himself off, like what had happened just now.
“Get off my legs before you cut the circulation off!” Sirius barked suddenly, once more throwing Remus onto his metaphorical bum.
This time, it only took Remus a split second to realize what Sirius wanted, and after a terse, “Oh, right,” he gracefully rolled off the other’s legs, but when he looked up, he saw just how close he and Sirius were to each other. No words were exchanged, because the emotions swirling in the depths of their eyes said more than words ever could.
Smiling, Remus scooted closer to Sirius and curled up next to him, threading his fingers into the fabric of the dark-haired boy’s shirt and burying his nose into the crook of the other’s neck, inhaling the scent that was uniquely Sirius, before he let out a contented sigh when he felt a strong arm drape over his own and pull him close, holding him in a protective yet loving manner.
