Name: Franken Stein
Fandom: Soul Eater
Timeline: After he finds out Justin set him up, but before Kid's rescue.
Age: 30-ish
Appearance:
Ici Abilities:
► He can see souls and figure out someone's characteristics/personality from what he sees. It involves staring at someone really intently and probably creeping the hell out of them.
► His “signature move” if you will, is his Soul Purge ability. He strikes at someone with the palm of his hand and... Basically electrocutes them. In the Soul Eater-verse, the explanation is that he concentrates his own soul wavelength through his hand and attacks the other person with it. To normal people, it pretty much knocks them out cold and blood comes pouring out of every orifice it can, depending on how badly it hit. With people who have some sort of special ability themselves it doesn't knock them out, just injures them and slows them down, pretty much. When he uses both hands, it's strong enough to take out stronger opponents, but it has the downside of needing both his hands free so he can't be using a weapon at the same time.
► Soul Stitches. He can use his soul wavelength to make stitches that immobilize either him or his opponent by tethering them to anything they’re currently touching. So he can stitch someone’s feet to the floor, someone’s hand to the wall, if they’re laying down he can keep them in place, whatever. The only issue is he needs to have given someone else a good jolt with his wavelength before it works.
► More mundanely, he’s a skilled martial artist and a terror to fight even if he’s going easy on you.
► He’s a doctor and knows how to patch people up if they get hurt, assuming he has the proper supplies. It’s hardly going to be pretty, but it’ll help.
► He's a bit of a tech wiz, too. He's good at tinkering around with stuff and making it useful, like a homemade coffee machine out of beakers, a Bunsen burner, and a few filters.
Personality: Stein is genuinely of the impression that the world is his own personal laboratory to tinker around in, and he has very, very little knowledge of the possible consequences of thinking that way. He loves dissecting things. Loves it. Mice, endangered birds, people… If it has a squishy outer shell he can get through, he will find a way to get through it and poke around its innards in horrific childlike glee. It takes a lot to stop this impulse of his, but certain people that are either strong enough to drag him off of someone or who he actually trusts can do it, though he’ll usually find a way to get back at them in his own special and very ironic little way. It’s not just pure curiosity that fuels his desires either, he’s also very much a sadist and enjoys scaring people to a very sick degree.
He’s more or less the textbook definition of a sociopath. Emotional things tend to go right over his head because he honestly doesn’t understand why people react to things the way they do, which tends to make him come off as a bit cold and distant and completely morally bankrupt. But factor in his curiosity and his inability to understand emotions, and it just fuels his desire to understand better in the only way he knows how: Dissecting people. So it’s really just an endless loop of Damn It, Stein.
While he knows that he’s a sociopath, he also knows how he’s supposed to act and occasionally is up for the challenge of acting that way. But even then, he’s not what anyone would call an upstanding member of society. When he’s being friendly with people he tends to act sarcastic and snarky, and likes getting a rise out of them by messing with their heads or scaring them.
But at the same time, he also exhibits some semblance of kindness to an extent. While he’s not nice to anyone, Stein can be pretty friendly when he’s up for it. He’s got a mile long Papa Bear streak, shockingly enough, and if you mess with one of his test subjects, you will regret it. You will regret it a lot. He’s fiercely protective of his possessions and, frankly, he can kick just about anyone’s ass.
Occasionally though, when he goes especially crazy, he loses most every part of his personality and goes borderline catatonic and hallucinates. He hallucinates a lot. He’s lived with them for most of his life, but when he’s really crazy, they get worse and he tends to actually be afraid of the things he sees and violently lash out at people. Even when he’s slightly saner, he’s always a bit worried about just how far-gone his mental state is at the moment.
All-in-all, he’s a violent, vicious sociopath, but if he finds someone who needs protection, he’s up for protecting them from everyone who isn’t him.
History: Stein originally shows up at the Villain of the Week for Maka and Co.’s (actually just Maka+Soul and Black*Star+Tsubaki at that point but… Meh, details) remedial lesson. And then after he beats the crap out of them and teaches them all a little something about Soul Perception which ends up being a major plot point later on, he actually reveals that he was LOL J/K about most of it and then he shows up as the replacement goldfish to their teacher that just died and was zombiefied thanks to Dr. Cocopuffs here. He sort of takes a backseat again until he and Spirit have to come and save Maka and Soul from getting stabbed by Crazyrona’s phlebotinum blood any more than they already were. And then because Ceiling!Medusa is watching Crona play with hir sword, Stein gets to fight her a bit too.
Though that fight is, frankly, rather pathetic to the one they get into later after Medusa crashes a fancy party and goes to hang out in the basement like a loser. Oh and she’s kinda trying to free an ancient evil that causes insanity too. Actually, I lie. It’s really not so much a fight as much as exposition and character development with a bit of blood thrown in for good measure. And there’s a flashback of Stein as an angry, lonely, bitchy little child who wangsted about his shrinks trying to figure out what was wrong with him and got pissy when they tried to blame his dead parents.
Much to everyone’s dismay said ancient evil actually does get released because Medusa’s quirty miniboss squad isn’t as useless as they look, and Stein goes right off the deep end for a little bit. And then he dives past the deep end and hangs out in a weird crazy people limbo for a while until Marie hacks up a snake that was chillin’ in her lung. And then Justin decided to frame Stein for the murder of (/giggle /snrk /is six years old) some guy named BJ and he’s forced to run off into the wilds of Nevada to find out who done it.
Once he gets back, he is put in the group of people who go off and rescue Kid from Noah and Co. And he thoroughly gets his ass kicked because he and the rest of the adults were evidently holding a gigantic idiot ball.
Roleplay Sample - Log: He appreciated the silence. For all the horrific, not to mention ironic, things he could say about this place, he enjoyed getting to sit in his room - cell, he should say - in silence, alone, with relatively few interruptions. It was the perfect opportunity to think. Think about escape, try and wake himself up, how to adapt some of these tests so he could try and conduct them when he got back…
But then, most of the tests had been the slightest bit too cruel even for his tastes, so he seriously doubted he’d follow through with that train of thought. Besides, there was no way he could manage to figure out how any of these tests worked while he was going through them.
Stein gave the bolt in his head a few good twists, the cranking breaking the silence. He might have actually been on to something with that. If he figured out how the facility itself worked and how these tests happened, he could probably spare himself from the more painful ones. So maybe that should be his next step in all this.
The bolt clicked into place. Yes, that’s what he would do, he decided with a slight smirk. After all, if he could find out how this place works, he might be able to formulate a better method of escape. And that had many more uses than trying to come up with a new way to harass his students. All he had to do now was sit and wait.
Roleplay Sample - Journal: My what a strange hallucination I’ve come up with this time… I like it, the layout here is very calming in a strange way. The white is nice; it looks like everyone’s floating. Or maybe my brain finally decided it couldn’t be bothered to come up with a background and there just isn’t one.
At any rate, this seems to not want to go away, so it’s just as well that I go along with it. It’s not like there’s anyone around to listen to me talk to myself.
So considering this place seems to be some sort of… Hospital, perhaps? Would any of you like to fill me in on what is actually supposed to be happening here?
