Like The Air After The Rain
“I’m fine.” Dean heard the words pass through his lips, but he didn’t mean them and by the look Bobby gave him, neither did he. He stood there beside Bobby and seeing the doubt in his eyes, he wanted to get away. He headed toward the back door and just as he reached the doorknob, he heard Bobby ask him where he was going. “I’m going to get something from the car.” He replied without turning back to look at Bobby.
He stepped through the door, down the stairs, letting the door slam shut behind him. He headed toward the impala and when he was beside his baby, he leaned back against it and took a deep breath with his eyes closed. He slowly opened his eyes as he slowly exhaled the air from his lungs. The truth was he wasn’t fine, of course he wasn’t. He was just trying to keep it together because everything else was falling apart. Sam was struggling with the collapse of the wall, they had a new enemy that they didn’t know how to fight and Castiel…well Castiel was gone. His Cas was gone.
He walked to the rear of the impala and opened the trunk. He was looking for his duffel bag, but when he saw what lay next to it, he paused. There beside it was Castiel’s folded up dirtied tan trench coat. “Damn it, Cas,” Dean whispered as tears pooled at the corners of his eyes. He reached out, grabbed the trench coat and pressed the bundle to his chest. He clutched it tightly to himself as the tears streamed down his face. “Cas, you stupid son of a bitch, if only you’d listen to me. You’d still be here with me.” He said through his tears, his voice cracking on the words. “I need you. I need you so bad.” He added looking down at the piece of fabric in his hands. His falling tears landing on the dirtied fabric of the coat, causing the fabric to darken where they fell.
He pressed the fabric to his face, catching a faint lingering scent of Castiel. Before whenever Castiel appeared or was around he could smell it, he always wondered if anyone else could smell it as well. However, no one ever mentioned the smell when Castiel was around, so he figured only he could. It was a smell he really couldn’t explain, like the air after it rained in a forest with an undercurrent of vanilla. He took in a deep breath, trying to keep Castiel’s scent etched in his memory, as he would probably never smell it again in his life.
He didn’t know how long he stayed there, clutching Castiel’s coat to him, but when he heard Bobby call out to him, he placed it gently in a side of the trunk of the impala and closed the hood. After he fixed Sam and defeated the leviathans, he would try to get Castiel back and when the angel was back he would need his coat. Until then, Dean would keep it safe for him. As he headed toward Bobby’s back door, a gust of wind came from out of nowhere and Dean could have sworn that the air smelled crisp and clean like after it rained with an undercurrent of vanilla.
