June 25: field again (after)

Jun 25, 2009 13:17

Sooooo, let's see... we're done with period 6 now. We've gotten several awesomely cool birds, including a Sharp-Shinned Hawk! It's tiny for a hawk, but could probably still eat you if it felt so inclined.

I had to tape two of our rulers together to measure his wing. >.< Photo by Erika Taketa.

We got a couple of Cedar Waxwings, which have these cool red waxy tips to some of the inner feathers on their wings... Google them, they're awesome.

So purty. Photo by Erika Taketa.

This is why they're called Waxwings... it'd be even better if the picture was in focus. >.<

Grrrr. They do look pretty evil with their bandit mask.

We've also gotten several chickadees!!! Adorable and diabolical at the same time. Erika figures they're the motorcycle gang of the bird word.

Mountain Chickadee. These guys are perpetually scraggly, even when they're not molting or anything.

The superstar of the day: Chestnut-Backed Chickadee! They're small for chickadees and utterly adorable!

We've been getting sapsuckers too (which are in the woodpecker family), and actual woodpeckers, and they have clawed our hands to a very painful pulp... puncture wounds and alcohol-based hand sanitizer do not go well together. Just FYI.

Red-Breasted Sapsucker. Less common and a bit less with the claws.

Red-Naped Sapsucker again.

Red-Naped Sapsucker wing. The blacker feathers are new and the duller brownish ones are old!

Downy Woodpecker! Cuteness!

Nom nom nom.

Other miscellaneous things .

Red-Breasted Nuthatch. A female, so her breast isn't very red, but awesome just the same!

The nuthatch again... she's in the process of molting her wings!

There are 2 or 3 female garter snakes living at Rattlesnake Springs, and we see them pretty much every morning we're there. I finally caught one, was musked (and smelled pretty bad the rest of the day), and brought it back to the banding station for Erika to take this pretty picture. ^-^ Photo by Erika Taketa.

FROG!!

Western Tanager pretty boy is hungry!

Time to be weighed!

American Robin. The king of weaponized excrement. >.<

We were very busy... there's at least one bird in all those bags!

At the bunkhouse... our friendly neighborhood Red-Naped Sapsucker, who is convinced that drumming on the clothesline support is going to get him dinner.

We've got a few days off now, so we're gonna go see Star Trek this afternoon, get groceries, and then off to Mt. Rainier National Park! Should be LOADS of fun!

Short post today!
