two observations

On the Staten Island ferry, a group of schoolkids were looking out the windows intently. One of the kids pointed at the water and shouted, "A SQUID!!"

At the Earth Day celebration in Central Park, there were girls leafletting for people to "Go Paperless".

At our school we are doing "Trayless Week," meaning that all the dining halls don't have any trays so you just have to balance all of your stuff at once and/or make multiple trips. The sentiment behind it is that they'll waste less water washing unnecessary dishes and also to hopefully discourage people from taking more food than they eat. This doesn't bug me so much since I never use a tray anyhow, but gosh it sure is a huge deal here at Colby. Everyone is freaking out about not being able to use a tray.

Also, my friend and I were joking today how we should make a thousand or more cards that say "Dear mother earth, Happy Earth Day!" and then deliver them by throwing them into the woods. Maybe we'll make the cards out of styrofoam.

no trays day is such a weird idea. it's just an awkward inconvenience, does it work though? do people waste less?
