Character
Name: Asuka Tenjoin
Series: Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
Timeline: The end of the series
Canon Resource Links: Over here! I'd just like to note that I'm going by the Japanese version, so there will be no dub names or information here. On that note, feel free to ask me to clarify anything!

Affiliation: Trainer

Personality: Asuka is one of the most popular students at the Duel Academy, diligent and intelligent, self-assured and pretty. All of this, coupled with being an Obelisk Blue (the highest rank in the school), gets her a LOT of attention, and you'd think all of that praise and admiration would go to her head, but you'd be wrong! Asuka refuses to go along with the crowd, especially when they mock others seen as inferior, and prefers to make judgments based on her own observations and experiences with aforementioned "inferiors". We see this when she is one of the few not laughing at a lower-ranked student for failing to answer a question in class, and how she reprimands her fellow Blues when they get to be too rude and inconsiderate. She doesn't lead people on, and is equally fair to everyone, offering friendliness.

She's also motivated, though her goals change throughout the season. Her first objective is to find her older brother, who's gone missing, and once she does find him, she continues to fight to recover all of the memories he lost. Otherwise, Asuka's primary concern is to not only grow and mature as a duelist, but to help out her friends in any way that she can, regardless of the risk. She's a firm believer of not always doing things on your own, which also means she'll become irate if she thinks someone's not taking everyone else into consideration and only thinking about themselves. But really, it takes a bit to really annoy her-- possibly because of half the crazy schemes her brother tries to drag her into or gets her involved with, and even then, Asuka can put an end to it very quickly.

For all of her patience and rationale, though, Asuka's got one fierce fighting spirit and she can be VERY SCARY at times, whether it's settling arguments, shutting Fubuki up, or dueling. Once she's in a duel, she gives it her all (often protecting her monsters by diverting the damage to herself), and it's by appealing to that spirit of hers in an attempt to rekindle it that Juudai manages to free her from a brainwashing. Asuka's true nature is a kind heart and a fiery determination, which ultimately ends up breaking through an icy exterior.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths
- Responsibility; when given a task, Asuka will fulfill it without complaint, from performing jobs for the principal to doing her best at schoolwork or dueling or what have you. She's the only student who ends up going to a certain class long after the other students have ditched it (though she eventually does the same), and people tend to come to her when they need help (such as when Kenzan and Shou get into a fight and she ends up doctoring them). She looks after other people and encourages them wherever she can.

- Dueling; Asuka is arguably the best female duelist in the entire school, and was once selected as one of the seven best duelists in the school to protect a set of keys. She's very skilled at strategizing and setting up combos in a matter of minutes, and has been able to hold her own in most situations. She loves the game, and has once flat-out said that she can't return any romantic intentions towards her, because she's "fallen in love with dueling". Obviously, that's changed a little over time, but she really does take it seriously.

- Confidence; she's very assured and determined, something that propels her forward and makes her a fun opponent in duels. Though Asuka does occasionally falter, she can usually pick herself back up and continue blazing onwards with her confidence restored to even greater levels. She knows what she's capable of, and she enjoys pushing herself to her limits and growing stronger. She has a very strong will, something that shows itself when she defends two friends without using a card she was provided with after being brainwashed, and forcing the brainwasher to completely strip her of her personality in order to fully control her.

- Fairness; as stated before, Asuka is all about equality and not judging others based on the color of their... uniform. Yeah. She associates with all people equally, frowns upon anyone who treats others differently for whatever reason, and isn't one to typically turn anyone down or punish them without hearing them out first. Or, you know, dueling them. Because that's what people in this series do. All of this fairness and equality includes cooperation, meaning she will become irritated if whoever she's working with becomes too selfish and doesn't take their partner into consideration, especially when she does.

- Level-headed-- BECAUSE SOMEONE IN THIS SERIES HAS TO BE and god knows all the time she's sat back and shook her head at any one of her guy friends being reckless and moronic and her girl friends being guy-crazy. Really, though, Asuka's just plain smart and one of the best students at the school.

Weaknesses
- Family. While it's true that Asuka's strength shines the most when she's fighting for family, her brother is one very huge weakness for her. Half of the danger she gets put into is because of her efforts to find/protect Fubuki, and she becomes more vulnerable when a family member is at stake. I mean, really, she gets placed into a duel where her soul is at risk, which she accepts in order to retrieve her brother's memories. She's more likely to lash out at someone when she feels that they're causing her brother pain.

- Doubts. Okay, I know I just said Asuka's got confidence, but even she has moments where she lacks assurance, and it's hard for her to get by without support. If you can slip past the strategies and prey on her insecurities, she's pretty much easy to gain control over. She loses hope in a duel where she can't figure out a strategy and fear makes her unable to fight, until Fubuki calls for her to return to him. She overthinks possibilities when Manjoume shows her his cards, and becomes unable to focus on her own strategies, and he taunts her and tells her that this was all fate and she has no control over it, thus effectively brainwashing her when he defeats her, and it takes a duel with Juudai to restore her to normal. She begins to doubt that Juudai truly cares about his friends, which ultimately results in her "death". She worries about studying abroad in a new place instead of staying at the academy as a research student, and doubts how good she'll be as a teacher, and once again has to be reminded of the people around her, who are growing up and forging their own paths and who will always be there for her. So yeah, I'd say she's sort of susceptible to mind games, though she's since gotten a lot more assured on where she stands and what she believes in.

Samples

First Person Sample:

[ Clearly Asuka has had some time to get accustomed to whatever is going on, because she doesn't look as confused as half of the new arrivals. Either that, or she's just getting used to showing up in a different area. ]

This wasn't quite what I had in mind when I agreed to study abroad, but it's... certainly been educational. At least the other places knew about Duel Monsters. That aside, I was hoping anyone on the network would be able to answer a question of mine.

Has anyone seen a young man with brown hair, who answers to Fubuki? Or Bucky or Blizzard Prince, if he's still entertaining idol ideas. He's my brother and I'm...

[ Asuka glances down, at the Seel that's gazing up at her. She sighs and presses a few fingers to her forehead. ]

Truthfully, I'm less worried about myself and this creature - er, Seel - that's been following me around, and more worried about him running wild here. [ a pause, and then in a softer tone, seemingly more to the Seel than her audience. ] It's more lonely when it's just you trapped in some place, isn't it? But then again, I'm not alone here, either.

Third Person Sample:

Asuka had been ready to go forth into the world. It had taken three years, but she'd been preparing for life after graduation, slowly but surely, and she hadn't wanted the principal's personal recommendation to go to waste. So she'd gone to America and the Duel College there.

But this wasn't America. America didn't have strange women who claimed to be your mother - something Asuka refused to believe, though she did share Fubuki's theatricality - and it definitely didn't harbor things like...

"Seel!"

... Things like this.

Asuka's interaction with seals could be condensed to a few aquarium trips, but none of them had looked anything like this bulky, ungainly white creature that was happily pulling itself after her with its flippers. And, while she was impressed with its ability to say the name of its own species, the fact remained that seals didn't typically talk at all. Perhaps if she had been Juudai and this thing a spirit, she might have been able to make sense of what it was trying to say, but the fact remained that she wasn't Juudai and she was confused. This little... seal was supposed to be her partner?

Maybe it was a good thing that Fubuki wasn't here. She could just see him now, glamorous in some overly-regal outfit with some poor creature of this world suspended from his upraised hands as if he were offering it to the heavens-- complete with "HA HA HA HA", of course. He'd probably also say something about increased appeal, and then she really would have to hurt him--

It took a moment to get back to the topic at hand, and to remember that judging by appearances was something she refused to engage in. Even if this Pokémon looked like one weird seal and not something that would be able to do much, there was always a chance that it was hiding some kind of power. Hadn't she herself been underestimated, as well as her monsters? And yet Cyber Tutu, one of the most innocuous-looking cards in her deck, could deal a lot of damage, even when up against much stronger opponents. She'd been given an opportunity to learn not only about this world, but her new partner, and Asuka wasn't foolish enough to waste it.

"You could be a Prima, for all I know," she murmured to the Seel, and laughed when it clapped its flippers excitedly and lost its balance, sprawling out on its belly. "Just... not on land."
