With my Android, it just syncs with Google Contacts. Of course, the fun is getting your contacts in there if you haven't already, but it'll import iCal....
I'm not gonna go all fanboy and defend Apple's decision not to include that feature, but there are other ways to get contacts onto the phone. V-Cards via email is usually the easiest way.
It's our CEO's phone. He had a crackberry, but then bought an iphone since it was "cool". He's managed to get in some cases, five different versions/copies of his contacts in there, and I was looking for an easy way to compare and delete the dupes. He also wanted all of the staff's information in there. Blackberry and Palm have always had a desktop manager to make this easy. Unless you have a Mac, there's no desktop manager for contact info.
My plan was to dump all the contact info via bluetooth to my PC, pull it into Outlook, then send it back to the phone, but the iBrick doesn't do data transfer over bluetooth, unless you jailbreak it.
Barring that option, all you have to do is get his PIM of choice to sync with a Google account and from there you can use Google's Sync service (hint: it's really Exchange) to put it all on the phone and keep it all synced up.
He does have a google account, but he just uses it for the Picasa stuff.
Also, I never figured that iTunes should interface with Outlook, probably because that's pants-on-head retarded. I guess I should ask where my plugin is for WinAmp to import my info from Lotus Notes.
I was trying to do all this without trying to set it up for him to handle, since explaining to him how to use tech stuff is like trying to show a parakeet how to operate a fusion reactor. They start fiddling with shiny things, and it all ends in a fabulous explosion.
I hate the iphone too, but if you have a mac, you can use bluetooth to send the contacts to the mac, and add them to the mac's addressbook. Then you're a sync or a mobileme away from having them in your phone.
*hugs his webos phone, which while having similar limitations, at least has a myriad of ways to import contacts and merge sync them together in real time*
