You've been here a long time, I take it?

It helps to feel better about the situation. Not that it changes the actual situation itself.

And like any kind of legend, we come up with explanations for certain phenomena that we don't understand. Without any clear evidence, though, it's impossible to know what's true and what isn't.

Well, that's true, but it's much easier to get through a bad situation when you try to look for the good, rather than letting yourself be consumed by the bad.

Unless you're one of the deities, of course. I'm sure they must know. But they're never very forthcoming about things like that, either.

There's a reason people in general tend to value optimists so much more than pessimists.

I keep hearing about these 'deities.' They're really gods?

We're certainly something of a rarity! But that's all right. Someone needs to hope for the best, after all, and I don't mind being the one to do it.

Er. Well, that's a bit complicated, I'm afraid. They're certainly no gods I've ever heard of, and no one really knows much about them because they mostly keep to themselves. And they do have powers like gods, since they're the ones that inflict the curses on us. But not long ago, the police here managed to catch one of them and put him in jail, which makes it seem as though they're not infallible, and I've met other...deities of sorts, I suppose you could call them, that outrank the ones we have around everyday. So there are others higher than them, too.

So this place has its own pantheon, even. Interesting. And by 'powers,' do you mean things we'd normally consider to be impossible? Causing curses to happen is one thing. Do they do anything besides that?

The other thing they do is grant trades. If there's something you want--from home, usually, or something for someone else, or someone's life back, even--you can trade with them for it. But the trades are...well. I've only ever made two, and they were both for someone else. And I'm not sorry I made either of them, but I'm certainly not eager to make any more, just the same.

Anything I could want from my own world? Or bringing back the dead? Sounds too good to be true. What do they deal in? Money? Or something else?

Oh, no, not money. It's memories, usually. Or sometimes they'll take other things, like senses or powers or things like that. A friend of mine once gave up his voice for a month in a trade. But the bigger the wish, the higher the price, and I think the only thing they'll trade for a life is another life.

They can just pluck memories out of our heads, then. Or cause one of our senses to cease functioning for a set period of time. Or bring someone back to life? It sounds like they're more in the business of causing miracles on demand than being actual gods.

Nothing says they have to grant them, though. And they are fickle enough to be gods, certainly.

A friend of mine has never believed that they are, though. So it really comes down to what you believe for yourself, in the end.

A fickle temperament on the part of those that run things around here would certainly explain a lot.

I've never been very religious, so the idea of a higher power doesn't hold much weight for me. Still, if they can do all that you say, I'm willing to believe that they're a force to be reckoned with.

Some of the ones that outrank them, though...sometimes they're nice. Or nicer, at least. One of them even seemed to care about us. But yes, they're certainly ones to be careful of, undoubtedly so.

I'll keep that in mind for the future. I'm not sure of how long I'll be here, but it's always nice to be prepared, regardless.
