The problem with that quote is that is very subtly suggests that bad things are only committed by those who are influence by religion, which we all know is just not the case.

I think it's saying that religion indicates some things as "bad" that aren't really bad. That's why good people end up doing bad things.

The way I read it, it's more absolute than that. Nevertheless, good people do bad things with and without religion. I mean, when a good atheist does a bad thing, is it still because of religion?

IMO, religion is bad. I really do not know where to start to explain. I was in a cult for ten years. Then I converted to Catholicism. I was seeking meaning in my life but did not find it until I learned that it is within myself. The religions forced me to put people into artificial boxes. They were either good or bad. They were either for us or against us. It was always us vs. them. There was no grey, no room for disagreement, no opportunity to debate. I do not know that I even believe in a god any more. So many religions want to deny the diversity of the human genome. They want to deny the variability that makes us a stronger species. I know that this does not really say anything but there is this amorphous idea that I mull around in my brain and at some point I will synthesize it into more manageable words.
