I wrote this up for people who're not entirely familiar with Fruits Basket canon.

Low on spoilers, mostly just conjecture.

Yuki and Kyou are both possessed by spirits of the Chinese Zodiac. Yuki is the rat, but Kyou is the cat. There's a story that the year order of the Chinese Zodiac was decided when God (aka the Jade Emperor) asked all of the animals to come to his banquet, which was tomorrow. The rat tricked the cat into thinking the banquet was the day after tomorrow, and thus missed both it, and his spot in the zodiac itself. Meanwhile, the rat rode on the ox's back and got to the banquet first, becoming the first year in the order. It is said this is why cats hate rats, and are always trying to catch them.

So, what does this have to do with Yuki and Kyou?

It's largely largely hinted that being cursed is more than transforming into the animal of the year you're born into, it affects your entire personality. Kyou hates Yuki, not only because if he manages to beat him (in practically any competition) he'll be able to fully "join" the Sohma family and enter the zodiac. (Now, the cat is treated like an outcast, which it is.)

Thus, to a certain extent, Yuki and Kyou can't help but hate each other. Yuki largely tries to ignore and avoid his curse and his family, and he still can't help hating Kyou, and calling him names like: "idiot cat."

That being said, Kyou is not so far gone either. He doesn't literally hate Yuki for 'tricking him into missing the banquet', but he does say things like: "the rat could never understand me."

So, Kyou is deadset on challenging Yuki, improving steadily, and then finally beating him. (The sooner the better.)

And Yuki wishes Kyou would give up and leave him alone, for the most part.

Also, you may notice in Kyou and Yuki's fights that anything Kyou does doesn't seem to do anything. This is not god-moding on my part (XD;), but it's said in the series that despite that they've fought almost every time they've met (more or less, until Tohru shows up), and despite that Kyou is the one who takes martial arts seriously, has dedicated himself to it, been trained since he was young by the person raising him, etc, while Yuki in comparison barely practices, despite all that...

...Kyou has yet to even land a single hit on Yuki.

It's also said that Yuki is holding back in their fights, even though he occasionally sends him literally flying back with the force from his punches/kicks.

That's likely part of the curse too.

Hope this explains a few things!
