the things i can think of off the top of my head are of course the colosseum and the vatican and the pantheon. the borghese gardens are beautiful - rent bikes or the ones that two people ride - it's way fun. also of course the trevi fountain. it's beautiful. piazza navona (i think?) is great and they have amazing gelato. when you go to the vatican they have free tours - definitely take it. i learned so much more that way when going to st peter's basilica. campo de fiori is great if you go monday though saturday mornings they have an outside market. but at night it is great too because they have some great bars - a big mix of americans and locals. my favourite was the drunken ship.
i can't really think of the names of other places but if you aren't there for long that should be enough. but there is a realyl cool garden outside of rome. its a palace i think and i really wanted to go there. it's famous for its fountains and landscape. so you can ask around about that...
have fun!
