This isn’t finished yet… Just a draft.
On a whim, partly inspired by you Lys and you tl;dr Abel essay, I’m going to try my hand into one about Rue’s City relationships and their evolution. Now, allow me to address one thing first: Rue in Princess Tutu was the popular-but-solitary type of girl who thinks the world is only about two people: her Prince and herself (sometimes, her “Father”). There’s a story of magical emotional abuse and cursed heart of epic proportions to explain the source of her loneliness which isn’t the point of this. The truth is, Rue actually has always craved for loved ones and it wasn’t until the end of PT and her two years of City growth she didn’t learn how mistaken she was in the past.
Being without Mytho or anybody when she first came here and forced to socialize. Then how her friendships and family comforted her when her Prince was gone did affect her profoundly. She, who was still a little reluctant to take many friends, finally opened her eyes to understand how much she had needed and wanted them. That both frightens her and makes her stronger after fighting off her fear (all increased thanks to the raven’s blood within her heart). Rue often thinks she is betraying her past absolute love for Mytho in allowing herself to care for other people. Although, she has been learning there’s a lot of different types of love.
I’m going to have divisions of categories to explain more or less how much people in the past and present mean to her. If I forgot someone (completely possible), comment. ;; No hard feelings, I’m kinda forgetful.
~The Prince~
Mytho aka Prince Siegfried deserves the first and stand alone category. He is in many ways the reason why Rue exists. Her biological parents gave birth to Sara (note: we never learn Rue’s real name. PT crew likes this one :D), the Raven created and raised “Kraehe” persona, but it wasn’t until she met Mytho and he, even heartless, showed her an act of kindness when she was young that she learned what being cared for was. Rue has always been a good person inside, even though the Raven tried to twist her, she didn’t follow down this path and even tried to help Mytho when he was down because he was the first being who even looked at her as a person. This impacted her so much that she re-baptized herself as Rue, claiming NOT to be a raven to him. Most of her life, Rue lived under the delusion nobody else but him (and he must be heartless or bound to her - for by himself was impossible) was able to love her.
Anyway, in all Mytho’s the source of love. The love Rue needs so desperately, she loves him with madness and wouldn’t think twice to throw her life away for him in the past because - he was everything she had. After her many City experiences, Rue has others who love her makes her conflicted and doubtful, but she would still choose him in the end. Rue realized it’s fine to love other people too. Mytho loves everything, but he chose to love her above everyone else. That’s exactly what Rue learned after he left her. That she would put him as priority, but he wasn’t her only loved one. This sacrifice makes her realize and appreciate how much Mytho gave up just for loving her.
Her love for Mytho is both absolute and encompassing romantic. Even when she was a young girl, she never saw him as a father/brother figure, but as her Prince. She can’t see other people as potential lovers because of this long nursing fixation. Rue’s aware she was a popular one in school, source of crushes/idol worship, but she dashed that wishful thinking immediately. Just because she opened her heart to other people now it wouldn’t mean she would develop romantic feelings for them, even a slight shred of them is impossible. Rue can’t fall in love with others because Mytho is already her perfect romantic match. There is no want when her desire was already fulfilled. She doesn’t mind those who flirt with her (unless they are outright rude) seriously or playfully, she would even return that teasing in good jolly friendship fun. She’s not shy or insecure about whom she loves, though she wouldn’t encourage or mislead someone thinking her serious either (sorry Autor : ( ).
Rue still keeps the engagement ring he gave her in the past. But she’s not telling him of the wedding plans. She’s convinced he will propose again, eventually.
~Family~
In the series, Rue’s an orphan raised by a demonic creature who just discovered all her life was a lie fabricated by the Monster Raven to in order to manipulate her. She never found who her real parents were, only that they looked for their daughter after the ravens kidnapped her from her crib. When I applied Rue, I’ve ALWAYS considered this story-arc as interesting to develop because it was left open and unfinished: her relationship with Mytho was resolved, but never this. In fact, she was taken when (in my interpretation) was about to start a journey to discover her origins. All the family discovery subplot that was lived in the City aren’t canonical, they are from fan-theories I endorsed to continue her development.
Family is very important to Rue. Rue is a character that needs to know her origins, something to hold herself into because she suffered identity crisis in the past. It’s part of her basic characterization to look at what she could been to know what she currently is. Also, she’s blindly devoted to her family, her upbringing by the Monster make it so. Not nearly as much as her total adoration for her Prince but comes very close.
Fakir is currently the most important member of her family. He’s her long lost brother and a very dear friend of hers. Rue enjoys his over protectiveness, in spite of her seemly independence (Rue’s a character who appears to be independent but she truly thrives on attention and protection, she’s too used to live without it that she enjoys it immensely). Why? Well, Rue needs love and Fakir, by being paternalistic, he’s showing her exactly what she needs.
However, this relationship wasn’t very positive in the beginning. In the past (aka series), they were bitter rivals, both vying for Mytho’s “custody” in their roles as his knight and his Princess since they were young. Rue, as Princess Kraehe, even tried to get Fakir killed. At the end of the series, they seem at best ignoring each others (Fakir didn’t seem upset at Mytho for choosing Rue, even happy for them. But they never addressed each others). When Fakir came to the City, the rivalry sparked anew, this time for Ahiru’s attention for Mytho wasn’t around (Fakir was jealous of Rue giving her a girl shape, Rue envied the degree of trust Ahiru put on Fakir). Curses and forced team-work, led them to open up their hearts and tell their side of the story, discovering how much in common they had both losing their families because of the ravens. After a truce and their efforts to protect Ahiru together and themselves, Rue and Fakir grew to be good friends. They snarked at each others and acted grumpy, but they honestly care for the other. This didn’t do but increase when they found out (thanks to Autor's family tree and against the best efforts of Drosselmeyer) that they were brother and sister. Rue finally found the family she had been secretly looking for, Fakir realized he could finally protect his family (from Drosselmeyer's City attempt to get the rid of her). The visits of the ghosts of their dead parents (that only they could see as consequence of a curse) affirmed this bond. They exorcised part of their angst from their losses. It still hurt Fakir to inform her that their parents died because of a story that went awry. Even if that crushed her, she was partly relieved they didn't give up searching for her, not even once until they died.
And is Fakir the reason why she could hesitate to return to Mytho’s kingdom. He died in the City and Rue doesn’t want to yet live without family. But in the end, she would choose her Prince. Of course, the matter was solved thanks to Professor Cat's sacrifice of speech and human-like form.
Wherever Autor is her real relative or not, Rue doesn’t know for sure, but he feels like a cousin after his gloating to be related to Fakir and Drosselmeyer (thus her, by proxy), she ended up believing it. She’s very aware of his romantic feelings to her and that makes her feel terrible for him. Her guilt only increases when she remembers it was him who made her realize she could be loved while she was trying to steal his heart. That’s why she forgave him for many things, including writing her as his girlfriend when he got Story-Spinner powers during a curse day. In all, Rue doesn’t know what she feels about Autor, aside of non-existing attraction, but she feels strongly connected to him in a mix of gratitude, annoyance, kinship and friendship, probably relative affection. Autor has also persuaded her to embrace her musical side she’d always put second to focus on her ballet, unconsciously aiding her to become more independent of what would Mytho need or want and more what she wants to do.
After he left and returned, Rue is a little hesitant to talk to him that’s because their relationship, in her POV, had grown intrinsically platonic and, without any recollection of his past experiences, Autor still crushes on her. That makes her feel bad again. Rue understands what is to love someone who couldn’t return your feelings.
She knows little of her parents, Alger & Caroline, only that her mother bears a striking resemblance to her and they looked for her everywhere before their accidental ends after Fakir wrote that story to recover her. The City curses brought their ghosts and she could finally meet them. She’s grateful for that. If she has children, those would be their names.
Rue has still trouble to accept she’s one of Drosselmeyer’s descendants. She can’t even consider him a relative, in laws at best since he IS Mytho’s creator. She has no intention to ever write to see what effect that has in reality. The idea disturbs her to no end. What she feels for Drosselmeyer is both hatred and gratitude. He made her life a hell for his own enjoyment, but without him, there won’t be a Mytho, and there won’t be Rue in a way. Still, she won’t allow him to play with their lives again so easily.
Finally, there is her “Father”, the Monster Raven, the demon who lied to her and source of her distress. She helped to kill him; she and Mytho defeated and destroyed him. She acted out of anger after discovering he lied to her, but also, out of pity. She knew how miserable the existence of someone who knew no love was supposed to be. If hers was nearly unbearable and she had the capacity to love? His would be much worse. In her own way, Rue still loves him and wishes he would have fought against his role as they did. But he didn’t, all she could do is not become like him and mourn his memory.
~Good People~
Being a “good person” implies having Mytho-like selfless, innocent and loving qualities that immediately catches Rue’s eye. She adores them, pretty much, because they shower love and affection without second thoughts and she needs that, she basks in their warmth as if it was sunlight. She’s very overprotective and possessive over these “good people” in lesser degree than she is of Mytho, of course. But, hanging around them, always makes Rue feel… she is lacking, she can never be like them, so pure and carefree. She will always be stained.
Ahiru is her best friend in the world. She’s the young girl who tried her darnest to befriend her back in her days of Kinkan, she’s the one who never gave up on Rue, and, in spite of her own feelings for Mytho, supported her unconditionally for them to have their happily ever after. As Kraehe, Rue did horrible things to Ahiru (or rather, Tutu), wanting her to vanish in a speck of light. As Rue, she acted more openly to her, still wary at the girl’s persistence and friendliness. Though, she really liked the attention and didn’t realize this until the end of the series. When Rue thinks her happiest moments? She doesn’t only remember those shared with her Prince, but one shared with Ahiru. Before leaving with Mytho, she admitted aloud how much she loves her.
In the City, Ahiru’s triggered her turning from Kraehe into Rue, she wanted to thank her for everything by sacrificing some precious memories of her Prince for a way she becomes a girl again. She hates seeing her hurt and unhappy and wants her to find happiness with Fakir. This is because Rue is very possessive over her loved ones in unspoken ways, Ahiru, in her opinion, should stay in the family. Seeing her with someone else but her brother would bother her: nobody takes away some of them. ;)
Besides Ahiru, there are two more people Rue considers a “good person” (three if we count Romeo, but they don’t have a relationship because of playercesting phobia) one is Tamaki and the other is Giselle. Tamaki has been a constant source of joy since her arrival. Tamaki managed to cheer her up when she was alone and crushed. She never forgets and Rue always looks up the well-being of those who worm a way into her heart. In a way, he’s like a mix of Femio and Ahiru, which makes him weird, but she overlooks his flaws for the fact that talking to him most of the time makes her happy. She knows he’s having a horrible time with the curses and feels impotent she can’t help. How can someone as tainted as she will help someone who isn’t?
As for Giselle… Rue was immediately taken by her. She looks taken out a storybook, the figure of the perfect Princess, Rue would like to be but she simply can’t. Rue admires Giselle’s subtle strength, how she maintains her cheerfulness, purity and way of thinking after the curses. Also, she agrees on many subjects about love… Rue’s very idealistic and romantic beneath that “dark mysterious” aura she has. She hopes Giselle is reunited with her one true love one day, but, something makes her pause and wonder - maybe her likeness with Ahiru and not only because both are redheads - if a Perfect Prince would be really her type.
~Kindred Souls~
Unlike the good people, Rue doesn’t befriend this type because they make her feel loved and forget her problems, but because they make her feel less lonely in her struggle and flaws. While she acts protective and sometimes overbearing on the good people, she’s less so here. Unless they really need her, obviously. This happens when they suffer as much as she did in the past. These are the people she’s not ashamed to be friends with, the ones she feels connected in some level. Certainly, they would never make her as happy as the ones above, but they make her feel relieved she’s not alone.
The first person she met in the City was Erik, the Opera Ghost. He frightened her first, hiding in the darkness and being ominous. But that soon passed, because Rue was pretty used to darkness. They shared their tragedies, one of being a creature who hides in shadows and languishes in unrequited love for a being of light. Only hers got a happy ending, one she was abruptly taken from. When Christine arrived, Rue was immediately aggressive at her, for not understanding his pain and choosing someone else over him. But they got together and Rue warmed up to Christine (who was a “good person”). It really breaks her heart they were separated by the City’s whims just when Erik was getting his well deserved happiness. In a way, Erik’s the REAL Father figure in Rue’s life, but she doesn’t realize it yet.
Rue shares also certain degree of affinity with Cain and Raven. She has always felt connected to both of them since their met. They carried themselves with the same ironic, guarded, darkly elegant aura she did. She couldn’t quite put her finger in what, still doesn’t with Raven (but they look and sound so alike that isn’t hard to find herself aware of the similitude), but she understands completely Cain’s distress over his father and his desperate love for someone who has a darker personality who hurt him, it reminded her to what she experienced when Mytho became the Raven Prince. The likeness to her won them a place in her home immediately.
Kaoru is an oddball in this category. He’s neither dark nor has a tormented unrequited love/bad father. In fact, Rue would have avoided him as a plague out ALL the Host Club because she, in one of his previous visits to the City, took his heart (this was during the incident her own was shattered and the negative emotions were returned first, leading to Kraehe’s darkest persona taking over). She’s grateful he has no memories of that. But, the day they were children? Little Rue and Little Kaoru shared an uncanny connection, they were both able to pass their guards and become friends. They accepted each others in their exclusive “two people population” worlds. Rue understands perfectly Kaoru’s need/obsession/dependence on Hikaru; because she feels the same for her Prince. It wasn’t the same circumstance that led them to ostracize themselves, but loneliness? Loneliness feels the same regardless of its origin. Just like Kaoru, Rue was split from her other half by the City, and during this period, she tried to keep him company, always knowing that nobody can fill the void, but also aware it helps him a little, just like those people who were there for her helped her. In Kaoru’s words during the honesty curse: “we are sad people.” A statement she agrees with. That’s why she’s his friend. He knows exactly how sad and flawed she is.
