Emma rolled over in bed. The warm pocket of air under the doona escaped, soon to be replaced by the cold air of the apartment. Max was gradually awoken by the aroma of coffee and the sounds of movement in the kitchen, Emma was muttering to herself, clearly displeased. Max opened her eyes, gritty with salt, and wondered for a moment why she had slept on the couch, and then saw the slightly crumpled letter sticking out from under a cushion, and the events of the previous evening came rushing back to her. She wished she could sleep again, float in that state of dark emptiness, but there was no sleep left in her ( ... )

Distracted by her mutterings, Emma didn't hear Max till she was in the kitchen. Trying not to draw attention to the file or the surveillance photos, she watched Max slump at the table as she gathered them back up, turning them face down in a pile.

"Well, you look pretty. Big night for the little kitty?"

Max drew herself up, leaning on her elbows, and giving Emma a sad smile. "Yeah... You could say that." She sighed and let her forehead fall to bump against the tabletop, causing the gold locket, which hung by it's chain over the back of her clenched fist to clatter slightly against the surface of the table.

The clatter drew Emma's attention. She eyed off the locket held in Max's clenched fist. "Pretty," she sipped her coffee while wheels turned.

Putting the mug down on the tabletop with a clunk, she placed boths hands palm down and leant forward slightly. "So, did you want to talk about it? Or are we going for mysteriously vague again?"
