Cthulhu is something of an icon in the gaming community.
Specifically, he is a fictional god made up by the horror author H. P. Lovecraft. He is one of the Old Ones, who may be older than time itself. He is so far above and beyond human comprehension, that merely looking at him will destroy your mind. He is currently sleeping beneath the ocean. When the stars are right, he will waken, and destroy the world.
However, as you may be able to tell from my icon, the geek community doesn't exactly revere him. He's something of a mascot. If you say "Ia! Ia!" and another person responds "Cthulhu ftaghn!" then you know you're both geeks. Kind of like early Christians making the mark of the fish in the sand to identify each other.
If you'd like, I can recommend some Lovecraft stories that explain a bit more. They are very well written, but disturbing in the way all good horror is.

They did, but I don't know what they are. What are they?
Also, I loved the note. And the salt shaker. That is the ultimate in "we know you, we know you are a freak, and we love you anyway."
And, of course, I love cthulu.

I'm glad you love it! Does the salt grind? I really wanted to try it out, but didn't want to open it.

My cthulhu isn't really a cthulhu - it is a lamp. And I love it.
