Did the article offer explanations for the coastal division?

My guesses are that it involves migration towards male-dominated jobs in the west (tech and agriculture), maybe some effects in the western cities from military or gay male populations, and higher populations of elderly in the east which will naturally include many more women (widow = single?) than men.

Also, Philly/Baltimore/DC may have discrepancies due to many more men than women dying from drugs and violence, or not being in the results due to imprisonment. Many questions about the survey methods.
