i've now had more than a full week of classes in med school, and i've been around and doing school-related orientation activities for two weeks. it's weird living in a new city. london always smells like skunks, and has lots of squirrels. and dentists. i like my house mostly but so far it's no fiddy arnold street (but really, what could be ( Read more... )

Hey:) I didn't love London when I first moved there either, but after I got used to the place it kind of grew on me (though, there are still other cities that I would rather live...) You should check out the Covent Garden Market (downtown) when you have time...It's pretty sweet, AND in the winter time they have an outdoor skating rink! Also, if you are ever interested in Karaoke, try Wit's End (near Masonville Mall) on Thursday's at 10:00. Anyway, I hope that things work out okay for you :)

i just went to Covent Garden Market a couple of days ago and it was great! any other golden suggestions? Did you discover any good thai or indian places while you were here?

Yeah, I basically lived at Covent Garden during 2nd term when I was the musical director for an Original Kids show (their theatre is on the upper floor). As for indian restaurants, Matt and I ate at Jewel of India a few times and we really liked it. It's on Richmond Street, close to Dundas. I also really like Jambalaya, which is Thai/Carribean/Cajun food. There is a lot of spicy stuff there, but also a few mild options. It's also on Richmond, across from Mongolian Grill (also good), and it's in a house. I've also heard that Under the Volcano (also on Richmond) is good, but I never ate there, and I'm not sure what kind of food they have. So, basically, go to Richmond St. and check out the restaurants along there. There is also a really good (somewhat pricey) restaurant attached to Covent Garden, but I'm not sure what it is called ( ... )

OH, and if you're looking to go out for a movie, but don't want to pay full price, check out the Rainbow Cinemas...they're in the Galleria Mall downtown.

hey emma do you want to have a coffee date sometime with me and julia? It seems like we have a lot of stuff (and friends) in common but we've never got to know eachother that well....

I feel you on the london thing, but I think Carmen is right, it seems like this city has a lot of potential, you just have to discover the good stuff.

Julia isn't that gung ho about med school either, she's keen to be a doctor, but a lot of stuff that is happening there is turning her off (apparently her small group mentor went on and on about how much money he makes and how they should all go out and buy sports cars because pretty soon they'll be "raking it in" just like he is)....

i love the weakerthans, but haven't been keeping up to date on the new stuff. where can i find that new virtue song?

Despite having lived in London for the majority of my life, I lived on the opposite end of it from Western, so I only really ended up downtown for Novacks (outdoors stuff, and they have a periscope out the roof), Rainbow Cinema (already mentioned), the Grand Theatre (I think they have cheap student rates if you're interested), and the Central Library (converted from an Eatons).

I do, however, second aniranda's suggestions, even if I've only been to most of those places once or twice.

Oh! If you get a bike, do try out the Thames river bike paths. They're rather lovely.

Also, ask Jen Y about London, since she lived much closer to your area than I.

wow, med school. craziness.

my grandma is actually in the hospital right now in hamilton and dean raso, former SASS president, is one of her doctors. he's doing a GI residency at st. joseph's. it was really really weird to run into him walking down the hall and find out he's been handling my grandmother, considering i've seen that guy so trashed he could hardly walk on many occasions.

of course, this may all be moot, cuz i think dean might have left after third year, before you even became an artsci! :p oh well, you probably get the picture anyways.

that's crazy! i never knew dean raso, i think he left right before i got there. i can't even imagine treating someone i (sort of) knew!

1) 'virtute explains her departure' is indeed devastating
2) I feel it necessary to mention that as I write this Kristina Han and I are suffering the aftereffects of a week of aikido and Queen's Fencing...and oh wow, only now do I realize what a twat Dave O'Donnel truly is.
