You'll enjoy Remains of the Day. If you want to get one read quickly, go for Charlotte's Web or the Secret Garden. They're both excellent books with great messages, plus they're fast reads.

My mom's become quite fascinated by Kazuo Ishiguro, so I know that'll merit checking out one of these days. I feel like I may have had Charlotte's Web read to me at some point when I was little, but I don't remember very distinctly. The Secret Garden...that might take me a while to bring myself to read. I seem to remember seeing a bit of the movie version when I was little and being a bit emotionally traumatized by it.
