I know this is stupid, but you know what really irritates me? People who misspell "whining" as "whinging". I see it a lot on knitting, and I always have to stare at it for a few seconds to figure out what the fuck that word is supposed to be. I mean, I'm usually the last person who'd want to bask in her own grammatical superiority, but honestly, how can ( Read more... )

Hi there, I've popped over from knitting and I just have to point out that whining and whinging is two different words not a case of misspspelling.

Obviously whinging isn't one used in your particular dialect of English, but LJ is pretty worldwide so you're bound to come across a few of those.

Heh. You learn something new every day! How exactly is it pronounced?

Pretty much as it's spelt following English pronouncination rules.

If I would try to do it phonetically it'd be something like:"Whindjin"

Maybe I should add some sort of meaning of the word. In many cases it's synonymous to whining. But with a more irritating and persistant quality.

Picture your classic kids in the back of the car scene:

The first "are we there yet?" may be whining depending on the tone it's delivered with. The second and third "are we there yet?" is moving towards whining no matter what tone but time between them might play a part.

20 minutes and five more "are we there yet?" later with no indication of it letting up and you've hit whinging.

A dog whines, never whinges.
