Poetry only sucks when you are writing it and trying to make it more than what it really is. It should just be comprised only of the words in your head. Nothing more. And it never needs to be judged.

Start with something, no matter what it is, and build it from there. Let it evolve on it's own. Poetry is like a kid. You can't force a kid to grow any faster than nature will allow. But you can feed it and shape it and let it take on a life of its own. Learn with it.
