I wrote a few replies to this but I think I'm beginning to understand that it's just advice you would offer me from a neutral standpoint.
When you wrote "It doesn't matter if you're the cause of the pain, your job is to support ...."
I'm not sure I really agree with that. I think that sometimes - particularly if you are in the centre of the conflict etc... there is no sense in causing more pain or hurt and it is not necessarily your turn to show your support but the turn of others to take up that slack.
I think you can only choose to give comfort to someone to the point at which you are comfortable... otherwise all that exists is awkwardness or a false sense of comforting which isn't comfort. It's obligation and yes I agree with you - the worst kind of support.
