My last job was at a city library. I like my current job, but I do miss the public sector on all those lovely little federal holidays like President's Day. Man, they had me earning my paycheck yesterday! One of my girls, who works as an executive assistant for a financial firm, says pink collar workers like me can get all those holidays off by ( Read more... )

This is probably the only time in my entire life that I'll ever agree with Bush about anything, but to me protesting against a company buying some ports just because the company is from a nation that some terrorists are also from smells distinctly unreasonably prejudiced.

Not just terrorists, but money and governmental support. I'm fully aware that terrorists can come from anywhere, even America. (Timothy McVeigh!) A lot of really questionable things can be passed through ports, and our nation can be economically crippled if this company, which by the way is run *by* the UAE and is not just from it, decides to restrict access in some form or fashion. These are not just "some" ports, either--these are the largest cities on the East Coast.

I'm sorry, but everyone in NYC is *really* touchy about this, and I've heard from several people who are about ready to stage a 21st century Boston Tea Party if this goes through--can you guess why? Some things can't be forgotten or forgiven. As much as Bush has used 9/11 to his advantage in his attempts to silence and intimidate so many of our people, you'd think he'd be perfectly aware of this.

Then again, we'd have thought a lot of things. :-(

Hmm . . . clearly I don't know enough about the issue. Thanks for explaining further!

If it were just a corporation that's run *out* of Dubai by private businesspeople, even, I could be made more amenable to this, but it's handing another country control of six major ports, and one that has sometimes been unfriendly to us, quite recently. I guess it's not unlike our controlling the Panama Canal...but I was all for the Panama Canal being controlled by Panama, too.

I admit that I'm extremely touchy about it, too, because my girl lost people in 9/11 and we have to live with the consequences of this.

The one time my wife and I got a complaint about our "display" from a homophobic passerby, she grabbed me, took off my glasses, bent me so far back the ends of my hair touched the ground, and kissed me like she was going off to war. When she was done, the woman was still there, jaw dropped, along with a few other people. "Now *that* was a display!" I shouted. Alas, we have gotten no more complaints here in liberal NYC. :-)

Being the typical male, I would welcome such displays of affection in my area ANYTIME. But that is just moi. ;-)
