Aiden had almost forgotten how cold New York could be sometimes. It was rainy and windy outside, but he had to brave the city for something important and really needed to see Harri. He hoped the boyfriend wasn't there. He still wasn't sure he was ready to meet the guy without belting him yet. He was peeling out of his coat when he rung the doorbell of Harri's apartment. The doorman of the complex had let him in, knowing him as Harri's best friend for ages. He had been stupid enough to wear his red Converse with his jeans and they were no soaked through making his feet cold. He hoped she had the heaters on so he could thaw himself out.
Harri got up to let Aiden in, her head falling against the edge of the door when it was too hard for her to keep upright. "Hello, love," she greeted him in a low, croaky voice. She pulled her cardigan tighter around her body and hugged her arms against her middle. The heaters were well and truly turned up, but Harri was still frozen. "I'd kiss you, but I don't think you want what I have. I'm pretty sure it's straight from Hell."
"I can't afford to get diseased right now, but I'm tough," Aiden laughed, slinging his arm around her waist and hugging her against him. "So, what's the verdict? Is he a good nurse or do I still have to keep March second open for kicking his arse?"
"Should I be concerned that you're going to wait so long to kick his arse on my behalf?" Harri asked as she gratefully leaned into him. Holding her head up was a lot harder than she remembered. "He's been wonderful, so don't worry. He's a very good nurse, and excellent eye candy."
Aiden nodded. "Yeah. He lives on the Upper West Side. His name's Andrew. He's a nice guy, but kind of on the shy side. Had a few drinks with him now and again at Luke's bar." He frowned. "How did you know?"
Now Aiden felt like he was sitting in a front of a near-completed puzzle with a few pieces missing. He tilted his head suspiciously. "I didn't tell you her name," he pointed out.
Harri was too sick to feel guilty, or bother with lying. "She mentioned her paramedic, and I remember knowing Luke's cousin was one. She also has a kid. While that is enough for me to take a wild stab, it's because Ali is Marc's--James'--best friend."
