The trouble with trying to find someone in a hospital the size of PPTH when you were from out of town was that inevitably you got lost. Kara had gotten lost for the better part of twenty minutes before she gave up, worried she'd miss Harri and have a pissed off boss on the trip home.
Harri wasn't out of her checkup yet, so Kara had taken a seat to wait, a coffee in hand. She'd had to do a double take as she saw the tall doctor in the bright scrubs. Alex looked different to the first time she'd met him.
Definitely wasn't a bad different though, except he looked exhausted. Kara got out of her seat and walked over to him, coffee held out. "Hope you like it with sugar," she said. "You look like you need this more than I do."
Alex had to blink three times before he realised who was standing in front of him. But it wasn't just her. His own mother could be standing in front of him telling him to pull his pants up and he wouldn't have realised at first. His eyes averted to the coffee as the penny dropped and he laughed, scratching the back of his head. "Do I really look that bad?" he asked her.
Kara couldn't help but laugh. She thought the blinking thing was adorable, and she really didn't take offence to the delayed reaction. She offered him the coffee again, smiling. "If it's any consolation I'd still jump you, even looking like this."
Alex accepted the coffee and waved his hand. "You'll have to do all the work," he said with a smirk. "I'm about as useful as socks with toes right now. It's been a hard night. I'm wondering right now if I'm dreaming you, to be honest. Are you a coffee angel or something? I was literally just wishing for caffeine."
"Oh, I don't know... sometimes doing stupid things is what makes us us." Kara smiled. "I think that's where Nate took a lot of the bullets for me. Although, I do remember Michael convincing me my boobs would only grow if I ate nothing but oranges for a week."
Kara nodded, and her hand found Alex's arm again as she gave it a soft squeeze. "I think any parent who loves their kid would be desperate for help. Especially a Christmas Miracle Baby like Lachlan's. But I can definitely understand that whole reasoning. I'd never be able to take care of my own kid... not like that, not while I was stressed out of my mind."
Alex sniggered and pointed. "That's a good one. I wish I had been that creative with my kid sister."
"I see it a lot. Of course, you do get the odd parent who thinks they know the best out of anyone and won't let me touch the kid. That's when it gets hard. Especially if the kid has something questionable going on. I like to think if I dip my toes in the parent pool, I'm going to come out like the likes of the Campbells."
Kara grinned. "Well, depending on how she feels about her breasts now, you could still give it a shot. Say you read it somewhere in a natural medicine magazine."
"I think we all would, really. I have no idea what kind of parent I'll be, but I'd like to think a pretty good one. I don't think I'll be a cool parent, though. I'll probably embarrass my kid no end."
"She wouldn't listen to me now. She's old enough to know I'm pulling the piss and would kick my ass," Alex decided.
He shrugged. "I guess it would depend what your partner was like. Good parents tend to bounce off each other with parenting skills. Everything is decided on together. It's nice. I think it would make parenting a joy to share it with someone. Not everyone is that lucky. Not everyone is lucky enough to get kids, either."
