Ordered lamps don't have a time limit, I don't think. You can activate the first and wait for as long as you like (I think Val did it once to erase aggro so there was quite a gap in time)
For the logic puzzle bits, it seems that the activated lamps don't always stay on if they're used in the proper sequence. We've gotten lamps off alot of times even though the final solution showed that they had been activated once in the correct order. For coming up with orders, what I do is call out the first order, which is arbitrary of course, like this
ABCDE
Let's say all lamps go off, I just move everyone one space to the right, like this:
EABCD
Now if say, A has his lamp stay on, I'd just keep him in the same spot and transpose everyone else:
DAEBC
This way you don't have to think about it very much.
