Peter was incredibly excited about China hosting the Olympics. He called more about an hour before it started, and he'd already gotten his extended family into his apartment to all watch it together. I think it was an especially poignant moment for his dad, who recently started treatment for cancer. I got to talk to him for a bit, and the pride was just kind of radiating from his voice.

I found the opening ceremonies mostly incredibly visually appealing, but with some elements that were just...creepy. Not politically or anything, just visually. In any case, I agree with your comments on Zhang Yimou. Though I was mostly happy to be able to say, "Hey, I even know who that is!"

I get excited about the Olympics in general, and of course the U.S. has hosted twice in the last 12 years, but I can't even explain how I felt, watching it happen in China. I was only there for two years so it feels unfair/unpatriotic to say it's like having two home countries (although I am really really really rooting for the U.S. in actual athletic achievement ( ... )
