A Stopped Clock Tells Bad Time

Sep 13, 2011 14:07

Dean turned the radio up and glanced at the watch in his left wrist. The day and most of the night had seemed to fly by and now Dean was driving away from his brother.

He had meant what he told Sam. They did make one hell of a team. But now Sam was going back to Jess and Dean back to his search for their missing father.

He raised his eyes to the road, only to drop them back down to his watch, giving his wrist a slightly shake.

Puzzlement etched creases in his forehead as he stared at the watch face, its hands frozen in place.

Then realization smacked him in the face and he almost slammed the breaks, causing the car he hadn't know was behind him to honk furiously at him.

3:49 am. That was the exact time Dean had stopped in front of Sam's apartment and dropped his off. He remembered because he hadn't known it was that late - Or early. That was a little over 5 minutes ago.

A sickening feeling settled deep in his gut and he hunched over the steering wheel as he whipped the Impala across the median and speed back toward the apartment Sam shared with his girlfriend.

The only other time Dean could remember an analogue clock stopping was in the presence of something evil. Just like the night 22 years ago when their mother was brutally murdered.

He hadn't realized anything was amiss then, but when his 4 year old mind was unable to fall asleep because of the unusual silence that filled the small room, he rolled over in his bed to look at the clock on the side table.

The steady 'tick tick' of the second hand that lulled him to sleep was no longer there.

Slowly he crawled out of bed and padded softly in socked feet across the hardwood floor.

Daddy could fix the clock. He could fix anything.

Dean's jaw clenched and his fingers tightened around the narrow steering wheel, foot pressed down hard on the accelerator.

Dad couldn't fix this.

Sam's apartment grew closer and Dean pulled the Impala to a screeching halt, out the door before the car had a chance to stop all the way.

His heart thudded against his chest as his feet beat out a frantic rhythm up the sidewalk and steps to the apartment

He grasped the room doorknob and yanked, finding it locked. Without missing a beat, he took a step back and slammed a booted foot into the door, smashing it inward.

"Sam?" he shouted, moving quickly into the house. For a second he didn't hear a thing and dread began to creep in.

Then he heard his little brothers horrified shout and he practically threw himself toward the sound, barging into Sam's room just in time to see the figure of his brother's girlfriend, pinned to the ceiling of their room, burst into flames.

Dad could never fix this.
