My question is, if this is really as great a breakthrough as the article makes it sound like, why is this the first I'v heard of it? The actual paper was published in August, and much as science journalism is lacking in quality, it shouldn't take that long for word to get out.
If you read the article carefully, its actually not that huge a breakthrough. They make it sound a lot more exciting than it is, like, the actual discovery/research isn't that earth shaking. However, its nice to know that they're making progress on things. Also, AIDS isn't really as exciting as some other diseases right now, unforatunatly.
The sick thing is that it's probably better not to make a big deal over how much progress has been made in the treatment of HIV... otherwise, people might be less afraid of infection and therefore less likely to practice safe sex. On the other hand, reading this article made me feel more hopeful, and I'm sure that many, many people would be glad to have read it as well.
