Topher loved being a vampire. He loved the hunt; the way he could smell their fear and see the primitive and ‘oh so amusing’ fear in their eyes. And then there was the pounding of their hearts; hearing it’s rhythm increase and decrease as they played with their prey. There was just something so delightfully enchanting about it.
But even better, he loved the power of making those hearts stop, the way he and Spike always looked at one another with a sense of pleasure and hunger in their eyes as the life was sputtered out and they were refreshed. It was a strange intimacy like no other, one Topher could never imagine letting go.
Still, something bothered him about the whole thing. Oddly enough, he was left wondering if it was his lack of remorse that caused his unease. He hadn’t been known for having a strong conscious before he was turned, quite the opposite actually, but his human self would have surely drawn the line at killing. Right? He wasn’t quite so sure anymore.
But it wasn’t until a quiet night, one spent lounging about Spike’s crypt that it hit him. That it was Spike himself. The promises made in those kisses that lured him over to the dark side hadn’t exactly been fulfilled. There had been no explosive vampiric sex. No rough demanding displays of eternal longing. The walls had not literally or even figuratively fallen down.
Did they really live in an Anne Rice world? Was companionship all he could ever expect?
If so, how come he hungered for more then that moment they shared before the death of their prey? Spike did flirt with him. He spoke sweet or saucy words, touched him tenderly or even passionately at times, but then, Topher had been by Spike’s side long enough to know that Spike was that way with everyone...
Or at least it felt like everyone after the first few times he bitterly witnessed it.
So now he was pretty much at the point of thinking that he had fooled himself. That those initial moments had been an amateur mistake brought on from seeing one too many vampire movies in his human days. It seemed he wasn’t having much for luck with scoring in the afterlife than he had had in his human life. There was no magical mystical vampire sex mojo… at least for him. Though he supposed that he could seduce one of his victims if he really, really wanted to. He just didn’t want to. As much as it drove him crazy, he wanted Spike.
So he remained quite, watching and wondering if someday he might be Spike’s. And it was sooner than he expected that the matter was addressed.
“It’s normal you know.”
Topher turned towards his ‘lover,’ who was laid out lazily in front of the tv. “What is?”
“The whole ‘seir lust’. You wouldn’t be quite right if you didn’t have it.”
Topher stared at him blankly as he leaned forward smiling knowingly.
“In my early days, there was nothing that would drive me more bonkers then my dear Drusilla looking at me with her deep crazy eyes.” He sighed. “I would have sailed the seven oceans for her… or at least wracked complete havoc to delight her.” He curled his nose and looked at him with his eyes shining. “She was a special girl.”
Topher sat there stunned, but Spike went on talking and acting like what he said was deeply and utterly insightful.
“You know, I’m a little insulted you’ve held out this long. Makes me wonder if I’m losing my touch.”
Topher blinked. No, Never. But he could not say that. He just didn’t know quite how to take this. He felt confused, overwhelmed, even a bit mad. “If you knew, why didn’t you just… ’take me?’”
Spike laughed, before pausing and trying to be sincere. Still, when he spoke it was with amusement and no small measure of teasing, “There are other types of prey then humans, dear….” Spike must have noted his expression because he added, “And it’s more fun to have you come begging for it.”
Topher eyes went wide as he stared into Spike’s taunting, yet wanting ones. Beg for it? He fought the urge to crawl on over on his knees and do just that. Instead, he stood and walked on over.
“I’ve been called a genius, a marvel. People would go out of their way to have access to my mind. I’m not use to begging.”
“Times change, love.” Then, they glared at one another a long moment, before Spike added, “Do you want this or not?”
Topher shivered at the want that ran through his body. He did. Desperately. In a defeat, he crumbled down into Spike’s lap.
Spike pulled him closer, before running a hand tenderly threw his hair. “There, doesn’t that feel better?”
He didn’t say yes. He couldn’t, but he cuddled into Spike’s neck. He could feel the man start at the action, before he relaxed and kissed the top of his head.
“When will this go away?” he muttered moments later.
“It won’t.”
Topher grasped tighter on to him… his seir… and Topher knew that he loved and hated him so much at the same time. But still more than anything, he wanted him.
