Diary of Jayne
The purpose of this picspam is to show the development of Jayne through Firefly's short run and the movie. Given how little time the show got, it really is amazing how much we learn about his character and how much he character changed.
While Jayne at first comes across as just the angry merc, right away we are given a hint that he has a softer side. He's clear from his reaction to Kaylee getting hurt that he cares about her.
Jayne is supposed to be out for himself, just making money as the muscle. When Mal gets in a bar fight related to the war, at first, Jayne claims that it's none of his business, but soon after jumps into the fight. Is this just a love of fighting kicking in or him supporting his friend?
Jayne has a great dislike of Simon. I believe this to be a mix of him being intimated by Simon's intelligence, his dislike of 'outsiders' and the fact that both he and Simon like Kaylee.
Jayne doesn't react well to threats. Errr... and an excuse for pics of Jayne being all musclely. :D
More proof that Jayne cares and of his increased friendship with Book.
Jayne is always great for a laugh though this scene once again shows that Jayne is threatened/putoff by Simon's intelligence/bookish ways.
Whatever else you might say about Jayne, one thing is sure, in the end he'll listen to his Captain, even if it means saving the crazy chick and her annoying brother.
Mrs.Renyonds is a good ep to see that Jayne likes to be acknowledged for his good deeds. It also shows all too when how he views women, as something that can be traded for (which is the one element of this character I don't like, I admit) and that he values his guns (if you hadn't figured that out yet already).
Jaynestown gives us a glimpse of Jayne's dark greedy past and just what he would be willing to do for money. It also shows once again that he wants to be 'acknowledged.' Lastly, it starts to show Jayne regretting his past actions and him facing up to the consequences they bought, something new for this character.
Jayne is shown at this point as being part of Serenity's family.
Flashback time!! We see how Jayne joined Serenity and of course it had to do with money... and getting his own bunk! We also see how fast he is willing to turn on 'his' people.
Note: This is how I see the events of Ariel. Not everyone agrees.
After being attacked by River, he has no issue at turning her and Simon over to the Alliance. She is a threat to him and 'his own.' Still, once he starts to understand why River is the way he is and what the Alliance did to her, he tries to back out. From there, they fight their way out of the hospital (with many bumps along the way).
When they get back to the ship, Jayne feels bad that Simon treats him as a hero but, soon we see Mal knows. Mal places him in the airlock because he 'turned on the crew' (Jayne doesn't see it that way, because in his mind River and Simon are outsiders, not crew). At this point, we see that though Jayne going to die, he cares enough about the rest of the crew that he begs Mal not to tell them what he did. Mal takes this as a sign and lets him live.
Jayne says he's in it for the money alone, but in the end, is willing to help save Wash and Mal, though it might equal death.
I like this scene because Simon finds out what Jayne did (from River of course) and both of them let Jayne know they won't just sit back and let him harm them.
OH YES! Jayne is a mommy's boy!! Another sign of Jayne's softer side.
Jayne's Diary Continues: The Movie
In the movie, we see that Jayne believes in River's 'talent' and even seems to be treating her as part of the crew now. So much so that he trusts what he she says and warns Mal that they have to get out of there. We also see again how afraid Jayne is of Reavers and that he rather die then be taken by one of them.
One of my favorite Jayne scenes from the movie. I just movie seeing him in awe of River and how he is even competing with her in the bar fight. He also feels that while River is freaking out and killing people, him being him is enough to stop her from hurting him.
One of the characterizations of Jayne is that he fears what he doesn't understand (River, Reavers, etc). Learning why Reavers are the way they are, must have been a big thing for him. In the end, he fights not for money, but to stop what the Alliance has done.
Jayne came a long way in his little screen time and by the end of it he was far more comfortable with his place in Serenity's little family.
