Little rants of the week

This week I moved to a new building at work, and am under a new boss (though still in essentially the same position.) New boss doesn't know I smoke, because generally I don't smoke during the day at work (but use snus.) I've gotten out of the habit during work since I find it a bother to take the elevator down and stand outside on the street and be ( Read more... )

The Cult of the Body is often referred to in relation to the rise of Nazism in Germany in the 20's and 30's. It comes from a catechism of the Catholic Church though originally, I believe:

"If morality requires respect for the life of the body, it does not make it an absolute value. It rejects a neo-pagan notion that tends to promote the cult of the body, to sacrifice everything for it's sake, to idolize physical perfection and success at sports. By its selective preference of the strong over the weak, such a conception can lead to the perversion of human relationships."

Rather appropriate in relation to the current attitudes towards smoking, drinking, eating healthily, exercise, etc.

That sort of behavior/comment only makes me less inclined to quit. I know it probably isn't practical, but I would encourage you to start smoking at work. The more of us who do our jobs well and smoke openly, the better the world will be. We have to show the antis that we are human, not mutants to be shunned.

You're right, I really should. I've pretty much gotten out of the habit now, so I don't miss it, but as it stands now I feel at times like I'm trying to hide something, or that my coworkers don't really know me, because they don't know I smoke.

I remember maybe ten years ago, I actually worked at an office that had a smoking lounge inside, on a separate floor. that was so nice- made you feel human. That was before all the bans, of course.
