SALAZAR APPREHENDED
Today, the evidence withheld by the US government in the Los Illuminados case became a high priority as Salazar was taken into custody by US forces. American sources at first held to "can neither confirm nor deny," the story, but have finally confirmed his presence in US custody.
Salazar has eighty deaths to his record. He is being investigated for the full list of Los Illuminados-related disappearances. He also was known to be part of the elimination of the small agricultural community so old and remote, it was simply called Pueblo.
Renewed attention has been focussed on his castle and its legendary death traps, but police have been keeping it from being visited, saying the possibility of a confession means that they want the site undisturbed in case they are told to find last remains.
"We only recently learned what happened to my husband," said a widow whose husband was a confirmed victim of Salazar. Her husband was seeking retirement on the proceeds of his book of castle architecture, and was last heard of going to seek permission to photograph the castle roofs. "And now there will finally be justice."
Or will there?
"We want him. We have the evidence to try him, and his crimes were committed against our people. Why hasn't he been handed over already? Why hasn't the evidence seized from the castle been handed over? Two of our policemen died trying to investigate the same case Salazar played a major role in," said the Chief of Police.
However, the official government statement is simple. "He's being held safely in custody. The aspects of the case mean that he cannot yet be safely held in any facility of ours."
There was no further comment. Bitter critics of this stance brought up the scandal in which leaked blueprints showed that the cost of the air conditioning and filtration system for this facility was an estimated two million pesetas. Authorities again declined to comment.
"It's going to be years before they're ready for trial," said a mother whose daughter was a recently confirmed Salazar victim. Her son, who went to look for her, also vanished. "It's already been years. When is this going to end?"
