Presto, TTC

I stumbled across a discussion in an online forum on the TTC's reluctance to adopt the Presto smart card payment system, described in this article. Presto already exists on the Go trains and in some cities in the GTA -- Oakville, for example. It works as a declining balance system, and has some neat fare discount implementations (again, in ( Read more... )

The TTC has never been quick to pick up on technology. I remember Hamilton having automatic change counters in their buses 15 years ago. Today on the TTC you just dump in a handful of change and if it seems big enough the driver lets on on board. My assumption was that the TTC preferred its current system because it costs more to argue with a passenger than it does to forgo the missing dime.

In Logan, of course, the city buses are free...

Ah, looking forward to Logan! When are you arriving? I'm flying in on Saturday evening...I'll have the day to poke around L.A. before heading to the airport. I'm hoping to check out one of the few remaining Cinerama theatres in the world (the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood).

I love the icon :). So you fly from YYZ to LAX, and then on to SLC? Or are you in LA for other business before that?

KD and I fly into SLC at midday on Sunday. She leaves on Wednesday afternoon, and we've done this routine for enough years now that I'm quite confident I'll be emo and useless Wednesday evening. I fly out on Friday, giving me Thursday afternoon to hike or just relax.

Business before - I've got the JPL planetary science summer school the first week in August. Will you want company Wednesday night? I wonder what the officially sanctioned activity is...I take it the go-cart racing and bungee jumping aren't coming back. The wee hours of Thursday morning is supposed to be the best time to catch the Perseids, I've heard.

Ah, right, I remember your mentioning that now. Enjoy!

Thanks, yes, company on Wednesday would be good. A couple years ago they stopped doing official events on Wednesday. Instead, the industry parties are now split between Tuesday and Wednesday. So I see several dinners made out of tiny cocktails in our future :). Or by Wednesday we may be sick of that and bail for something real.
