I actually AM a psychologist (sorta) but yet I'm losing faith in this direction, because yeah, I think I'd end up being impatient and frustrated with people who won't do the obvious thing to help themselves. People just develop headtrips and heartaches, starting in childhood, that corrupt their concepts of self, right/wrong, and the way they deal with later relationships. And for some people, in extreme forms, they manifest their own self-hatred and lack of self-worth in sick, destructive relationships where they allow other people to abuse them horribly, because they truly don't know or believe that they don't deserve it or shouldn't accept it. People get so desperate for any form of love and security that they'll remain loyal to their abusers, like kicked dogs still adhere to their masters. To greater and lesser extents, I think almost everyone is guilty of the same thing; either accepting less than they deserve or hurting other people compulsively, both without wanting to, just not knowing how to stop the cycle.
