Spring

It was the kind of day most people loved. Bright but not too hot, blue skies but with the odd fluffy cloud floating around. Wordsworth would have loved it. Doyle hated it with a passion, though, for today was D-Day. The day the world as he knew it ended and a nuclear winter began.
Cowley had decreed he had to have a partner, and Cowley’s word was law. The only way out of it, as far as Doyle could see, was to be killed in the line of duty or to find a bird, have a whirlwind romance and drag her down the aisle, kicking and screaming. Of the two, Doyle didn’t know which was worse, but both looked decidedly better prospects than taking a new partner.
So it was here, today, on the 14th of February that he boldly leapt into the bright unknown and entered the chasm otherwise known as Cowley’s office. It’s one small step for mankind; one giant step for Doyle, he thought, and on bloody Valentine’s Day too.
Receiving the go-ahead to enter, Doyle squared his shoulders before opening the oak door. He strode in confidently, slumping down into one of the chairs.
