After reading Alan Lightman's Einstein's Dreams, in which he postulates all the different ways time could manifest itself. My favorite was the chapter when time stopped. In his depiction, when time stopped, people were frozen and became a mere snapshot of themselves. I began to wonder, however, what it would be like if time stopped and people did not. Therefore, my idea about what it would be like to live in a world with no time was born and I have since begun fleshing out characters who live in this world. This world is present day with the exception of the fact that everyone suddenly becomes momentarily immortal; the sick miraculously heal and no one continues to age.
Initially, most people are overjoyed (one of the main characters was terminal, had said her goodbyes, and was ready to die). They can't believe their luck! Now, finally, they have time to do all those things they dreamed of but had to put off because there just wasn't time! There is more than enough time now! Everyone's reaction is unique; some respond recklessly while others seize the day.
But that excitement wanes as their lives drag on. There is no longer the drive to be productive, to accomplish because there will always be a tomorrow. There is, quite literally, too much time and nothing carries meaning.
However, I am also fascinated by end of the world stories and our reaction to it. Therefore, I want to organize the story where time stops for the first half of it, but then time begins to right its wrong and not only begins to move again but races ahead. Without the plague or monsters to distract them, it is literally the end of the world as no one was born while time stopped and time is trying to make up 100 lost years.
