CHARACTER NAME | Hakuren Oak
CHARACTER SERIES | 07-ghost
CANON POINT | Chapter 38 -- when Hakuren is summoned to go to tutor the Princess
DESIRED CLASS & REASONING | Harvest Cleric
Hakuren is an apprentice bishop; despite being able to only use offensive/attack-type Zaiphon with his Baculus, he has admitted that he prefers the helpful, healing sorts of tasks. He appears happiest when Bishop Castor takes him to a distant hospital to help the sick and wounded there. Also, clergymen in 07-Ghost use Baculus in conjunction with their zaiphon, thus making a very nice parallel the the way that Harvest Clerics work. :)

BACKGROUND | Born into the noble Oak family, a family known throughout Barsburg as a family that has produced military men and politicians without fail - Hakuren's life veered off course from the familiar Oak line due to a very important event. When his mother was taken over by Kor - this canon's equivalent of a demon (or Akuma, if you're a DGM fan) - Hakuren had appealed to his father to seek help from the Church. In Barsburg, the Pope holds equal power to the King, which results in the Military being at odds with the Clergy. But that wasn't what stopped the older Oak from finding help for his wife; he couldn't bear to stain the noble Oak name by admitting that one of them had been taken over by a Kor. Such a possession meant they had weak will or were incapable of living on their own. Something that the Oak name simply must not be tarnished with.

Hakuren didn't agree with his father's opinion.

It happened one night, as the young Hakuren was praying for his mother's health at her side when a bishop came in (through the window) and purified the Kor. Of course, that was a shining moment for the child and he decided that he wanted to pursue a career in the Church. A couple of years later, he was considered a bit of an estranged family member (but his mother had faith in him and that was all Hakuren needed)

The series doesn't mention how long Hakuren spent at the Church in the Seventh District, but his life was about to be changed by the appearance of a young boy who mistook him as another friend. So started the initially shaky now incredibly cheesy heartwarming(?) friendship/rivalry between foxface and elementary schooler Hakuren Oak and Teito Klein. They didn't get along at all initially, with insults flying around and the unanimous thought of "if this wasn't a church, I'd punch him". After a few weeks of living together though, the two realized that they had each been mistaken about the other. Which is understandable, as Hakuren was pretty much thrown from the third story hallway of the church trying to defend Teito (to which Teito replied by jumping out the window after him). There were other various events along the way; clearing Bishop Frau's name (Hakuren almost died), Teito getting kidnapped shortly afterwards (Hakuren blew up the ship they were in to get them both out despite the fact that they both could have died) and just being concerned for each other's overall well-being. In the end, the two passed the Bishop's Exam together; the final answer for the first part of the exam required them to defeat each other to go through the victor's door... Neither of whom agreed to which resulted in both walking into the loser's door and answering the true question.

Teamwork is awesome, and don't you forget it.

Their reunion after the second part of the Bishop's Exam was interrupted by the appearance of the military. Teito was forced to flee the church while Hakuren stayed behind. With a promise to meet each other again, the two friends parted ways. At the church, the estranged Oak was placed under Bishop Castor's wing and helped out with various duties around the church. Despite the mundane quality of the work, Hakuren found that he enjoyed helping others immensely. Eventually, it came time for him to leave the church to journey around Barsburg with Bishop Castor... The trip was interrupted before it could begin by a letter from the Imperial family requesting him to tutor the princess; something that he was adamantly against. Despite having resolved the issues he had concerning his father, Hakuren still could not stand the idea of the old man trying so hard to pull him out of the church and back into 'respectable' occupations. That, and he says he dislikes women.

Castor was able to change Hakuren's mind after he brought the youth to a hospital on the outskirts of the district. There, Hakuren came to realize that if he did tutor the princess then it meant there was a way for the voices of the weak to be heard. Even if he was no longer directly involved with the church, he had not forgotten all that he learned and so would continue to pursue the route he had chosen. So he thanked Castor for teaching him well and then departed for the Capital.

PERSONALITY | Hakuren's a bit of an odd one. On one hand, he's arrogant, narcissitc and air headed, often times showing off in front of other apprentices or seemingly glossing over rather important details (Hakuren... There's a baby dragon perched on your head...). On the other hand, he has been shown repeatedly as someone who truly does care about the well being of others. This stems from his honest intention of becoming a bishop; a choice he made early in life when his mother - who was possessed by a Kor - was saved by a passing Bishop.

However, as a member of the prestegious Oak family known throughout the districts as a family that only has an interest in the military or the government, Hakuren and his father never see eye-to-eye. Since his father denied getting his mother to the Church to heal her the young Oak has since lost respect for his father. There is still some remnants of respect for his family name though, as he was offended when Teito called him "Cowardly Oaks" (admittedly, this was made in reference to another family member, Shuri Oak, who was introduced earlier in the series). Rather rebelious in regards to his family, the only person in the Oak family that Hakuren thinks fondly of is his mother.

Indeed, he mentions after receiving the summons that he dislikes women in general though there are exceptions.

Hakuren's desire to become a bishop though leads him to being kind to those who need it, the young, the weak and the old. To exterminate Kor is but one way for him to protect those weaker than himself and so he has dedicated himself fully to the role of apprentice Bishop. It's a source of pride for him. Outside of that group though, he tends to act haughty around his peers, boasting and showing off or otherwise playing hero, such as when he was thrown off the ledge of the church while defending Teito... The action was simply brushed off as a "conditioned reflex". (probably from defending other students during Baculus practice or for later use, should a Kor or Wars attack a civilian)

When forced into a partnership, Hakuren is perfectly capable of setting aside his differences and working with said person. He still boasts and doesn't appear to make a marked difference in his attitude, but Hakuren tries his best to accomodate his partner. From what's shown in the manga anyway. After a point, he treats his partner with concern and kindness to the point of mothering them at times.

The apprentice bishop can keep his calm, facing whatever situation it is with a level head. His devotion to the church might be one of the reasons he can face these sorts of trials with courage; with faith in his own skills and in the protection of the Gods, Hakuren will continue to work to become a Bishop. There are moments where he bursts out in anger or frustration, but those normally involve his family (specifically, his father) or a certain stubborn peer. Otherwise, Hakuren seems to display the patience befitting a saint.

Which is suitable, considering his desire to become bishop.
