This was so beautiful! Thanks so much for posting. The concept of Dean having to dig himself out of a grave often in Hell, and using a little checklist to ascertain whether it was real, was believable and so sad. I really like how you recounted the canon events of Lazarus Rising from this perspective, like his mindset when eating the chocolate and hearing Cas's true voice, as it's always awesome to see canon in a new light. The psychology of why Dean was purging was really well done. I liked the theme of the list throughout, and how it modified over time. Sam's role, arrrg, I felt so sad. Really liked when he kept an eye out for Dean at first, obviously, and then kind of devastated when he was a neglectful bitch. Cas's part was awww, just beautiful. I adored that he reassured Dean and reminded him that the handprint was also a sign of his humanity. The little bits of dialogue too, were very IC. Amazing job xx

I really like to try to fit things into canon, to try to make it so you could believe it was going on the whole time and they just didn't show it on screen.

Sam made me sad too, throughout basically all of season 4. I was sad they were getting pulled apart :(

Wrenching as Dean loses Sam...

I really liked the appearance of Cas here. I was worried when Dean was in the bathroom, it didn't seem like Sam would be able to see him. It reminded me of the overall season 4 stuff, Sam and Dean drifting apart and closer to Cas and Ruby. I always enjoy seeing Bobby in your writing too, he's really good at working things out with Dean. It made me sad that Sam returned to doing his Dean duties enough to keep his brother alive, but stopped there. I liked the idea of the lists that Dean had, and it seemed like it would have worked if he had told Sam when there was first blood.

I'm glad you like seeing Bobby here, I always kind of worry about writing him.

Sam makes me sad too. I think you're right, that it would have worked, but Dean was waiting for Sam to step in, and I think Sam was waiting for Dean to tell him there was a problem, and they were just so out of sync.

So I just burned through this whole series and it's all fantastic but I think this is my favourite... Not just because of Cas (though his role is beautifully played out here), and not just because it has a (temporary) happyish ending, but because every step of Dean's thought processes is laid out so clearly, and when it got to the part about wanting to go back to where things make sense and realising to himself that he meant hell, it just stopped me dead. What an image. And it totally made sense, it's like people who leave prison and half want to go back because life outside is so damn hard. Your writing is excellent, thank you. So glad someone recced this on spn storyfinders!
