i tag my posts. Every time a person is mentioned, i tag it with their name, or if it's a survey, or if it's about music, or if it's just random, like:
Our next-door neighbors are having a Pirate birthday party for their young son,
and there is a cannon in my front yard.

There are a couple of reasons to tag your posts:
1] If you like to go back and re-read your posts.
2] If you know that people read your posts, and would want to go back and re-read your posts.
It makes things one hellof a lot easier for them or for you. But if you don't think people read them or you have no intention to yourself, then it's not something to worry about.
It's very important for searching capabilities. Livejournal does not include the ability to search each person's blog for a particular post. Let's say I wrote about a particularly crazy night for us, and months later wanted to read about it again or find out when it happened. Without tags, I'd be left to guessing the month and browsing the archives. However, if I'd properly tagged the post with something like "the crazies", it'd lower the number of posts I'd have to dig through to find the one I need.
I do intend to go back and tag my posts sometimes. I happen to post a lot (I have around 500 or so, I think), so it's a helpful function for me. If you don't post so much, then I guess you don't need it.
