Can anyone recommend reliable yet inexpensive web hosting companies?

Dunno what your needs are, but I've been using YRHost.com for years. At $50 a year, it's pretty reasonable.

I recommend GoDaddy b/c that is who I use for all my web development projects. I've used others before but was not happy with the service. You can get good deals with GoDaddy and best of all, great customer service!

my first instinct was to go with godaddy since I have my domain registered thru them. thing I don't like about them is their navagation system is too complicated and every time I log on I get bombarded with "buy this now!you really really need it!" promotions. I realize they are trying to get more business but I'm always afraid I'm going to hit the wrong link and end up stuck with something I don't want.
