"Tell me you saw that." Lane said tensely. She and Connor were heading for Margarittaville for dinner, when a passing couple had given the former Slayer a suspicious look.
"What," Connor said, trying to brush it off. "You're hot, you don't get people checking you out? Even demons?"
Lane gave him a disgusted look. "They think I did it." she stated baldly.
"No one thinks you did it." They were both on edge, though for slightly different reasons. Last night, Crowley had informed them that a number of Vampires, and Demons had been reported missing, or had turned up dead. He had charged them with the task of finding out who was responsible.
"We might have a Slayer on our hands." he'd said reluctantly, and Lane had paled.
"You're kidding right?" Connor said automatically. "Vampires and Demons-"
"Are citizens of New Orleans." Crowley had interrupted. "What you thought you'd just be protecting humans from Demons? Time you learned what New Orleans is all about kid. We're all in this together. Sometimes you gotta protect the Demons from humans."
"I can't get kicked get kicked out of town Ace." Lane said, pulling to a stop on the street. "I can't, it's the only place I'm safe-" She cut herself off.
"Safe from who?" Connor demanded. "Jesus Lane I've seen the buddy movies, Partners are supposed to trust each other right? You're one of the few people I've told that I'm half Vampire."
"Everyone knows you're half Vampire."
"Not because I told them."
Lane shook her head. "Not now." she said. "Not here. C'mon, I'm starving." They passed a girl with yellow skin and a row of spines in her eyebrows. In the shadows of the street she just looked like an unhealthy punk. She gave Lane a wide berth.
"I saved your ass from a Circus!" his partner said indignantly.
