Text messages requesting that Leif drop everything and come home were nothing new. He'd often get them in the middle of a rehearsal or while he was out walking the dogs, or, more recently, during the part-time job at the local dance studio he'd gotten (receptionist work, but it was still a great environment and a fun way to spend the time when Adler had other obligations). Usually they ranged from teasing -- "come home or I'll ride in on Freja like a wild caveman and carry you away over my shoulder" -- to somewhat obscene -- "come home so we can [censored] and I'll [censored] your [censored] until you [censored] all over my [censoredBut this was new. This simple, three word, uncapitalized, unpunctuated request, without explanation or context, was unlike any other message he'd ever received from his husband. Naturally, Leif's first reaction was to try calling Adler, even as he was standing and making his apologies to the studio owner -- "family emergency" -- and waving off the confused questions from his coworkers. He couldn't explain ( ... )

Leif's voice, soft and hesitant over the sound of the water brings Adler back for a moment, his brain suddenly flooded with awareness that he's been struggling to get a grasp on since he got that horrible phone call and he grips into the tile a little harsher, his head rolling along the cool texture.

"Leaves...."

It's not much more than a whisper. A silent plea that he hopes Leif hears and responds to. He knows enough to know he needs help.

Leif doesn't hesitate more -- he slides out of his clothes and leaves them in a heap on the floor, shutting the door behind him. The air is thick and wet and hot, and he's already sweating as he tugs the shower curtain aside and slowly steps into the stream of water behind Adler. The shower is scorching hot, and he gasps a little, but never falters, moving forward and gently sliding his arms around his husband's waist, kissing the back of his neck, pulling him back firmly, protectively.

"What happened?"

Even with the water as hot as it is, Adler is shaking under it's spray, his body tense and rigid, something that only changes marginally when Leif puts his arms around him. He just shakes his head and leans back against his husband, eyes closed as he turns his head and rubs his forehead along Leif's chin.

Adler's never been the best at handling bad news and now is no different. It caught him off guard and effected him in a way that he's not even sure how to process yet. He's body is in shock but more than that, he's too uptight to get his thoughts together. His brain is trying to wrap around too many things at once and leaving him a shaking ball of nervous energy with no outlet. He wouldn't be able to concentrate if he tried.
