That's amazing! He probably senses that they are dying and goes there to give a sort of comfort. A cat breeder in the comments to the article says that cats sometimes sit witha dying cat or kitten, but usually leave before they actually do die. Maybe Oscar adapted this instinctive behaviour to the behaviour of the people around him who feed him and care for him.
Yeah, animals are able to pick up on tons of things that people are oblivious to until it's too late. Cats I've had in the past have become more affectionate when someone in the family was sick. They'd go take naps with the sick person, etc. As with Oscar, they were cats that weren't too affectionate otherwise. When my brother was very sick, his fiancee's cat--who you could barely pet--would curl up with him and try to make him feel better. I hope there's a cat nearby when I go. For me, cats make everything better :)
