B. came home from school recently with a worksheet that helped her choose an instrument to learn. The kids all got to hold the instruments so they could assess size (too small, just right, too big). They got to hear them so they could assess tone (too high, just right, too low

Interesting. Orchestra2001's layout usually has the percussion right behind the violas, with the violins being the farthest away. Maybe she should work on being a switch-hitter...

Distance from the percussion section is a perfectly valid criterion, but I would feel remiss if I didn't point out that the clarinets often sit directly in front of the trumpets, so do keep that in mind.
