"On a side note, I wonder if President Bush is now going to start to become interested in a) global warming and the role he could play in slowing it, and b) alternative sources of clean energy/fuel... Here's hoping some good can come out of this after all."
Bush would have to take his head out of his ass first, and realize that he needs to be a leader of his country and an active participant in helping to keep our planet alive. And of course... all of this really needs to come before his pathetically expensive wars!!!!
Oh but Irina, the Democrats are the ones who have the environment on their campaign platform. Democrats are the ones who are outraged by drilling in Alaska, protecting the air, keeping a handle on big business pollution, protecting the Endangered Species act and preventing logging in Old Growth Forests. If Bush did anything responsible about global warming, he'd have to do something that Democrats want. He'd have to *gasp* acknowledge making a mistake! We wouldn't want that now, would we?
PS. I'm so glad you're keeping a journal! I had no idea until I read Essie's yesterday.
Not speaking politics but science, more reports prove that we are not causing global warming. It is a cycle the earth goes through, and when things get to hot, mother nature will fight back and throw us into another ice age. It has happened before, and it will happen again. I agree the enviroment needs to be protected, but global warming is bunk. I studied this with a very liberal, very hippie, very enviromentalist teacher who even admitted that we are arrogant to think we effect the enviroment on such a huge global level. These reports tend to not get as much news though.
I do not believe that Global Warming is bad enough yet to have produced significant climate change and it is probably impossible to link Katrina specifically to any that has.
However, I do not believe that Global Warming is bunk. The scientists I know absolutely believe it is a real concern we should take seriously. They also also explained that there is little that we can actually 'prove' or disprove.
I agree it cannot really be proved or disproven. It takes tens of thousands of years to see a significant enough change. We just don't have enough long term data. And again, I think it is impossible to say that Katrina was caused by Global warming which is all the US's fault. It takes ages for what we do to actually show their full effects, there are some things we will never know for sure the results in our lifetime.
I have no idea who you are, but may I say, I find you both articulate and knowledgable. (which is a dangerous combination when debating liberals...facts to a liberal are like kryptonite to superman) Thank you for your posts.
