General ramble

This is a completely non-political post, you'll be glad to hear. :)

I was reading the babycentre.co.uk website and came across an article on herbs that are safe to use when breastfeeding or not. Link for anyone interested: http://www.babycentre.co.uk/general/8788.html#herbs
And it says that some of the herbs if taken in high dosage may make your perspiration smell of maple syrup. So, what do people think - is that a good thing? Does maple syrup smell the same way it tastes? (It's been a long time since I had any!) It's got to be better than smelling like onions - but maybe it would just attract flies?

Our plans for today involve going to Ikea to look at beds. The middle leg of ours has finally given up - it was a cheap bed to be fair and we've had to repair it every few months since we got married - and we can't sleep properly now because it sags in the middle. So we're going to look at getting two singles to push together. We always said we wouldn't have separate beds but as Dan has been sleeping in the spare room on and off for the past month (due to the pregnancy, I hasten to add!) it seems like we could at least share a bedroom but with separate mattresses and then when I turn over or get up to feed the baby it doesn't have to wake him.

And after that our New Zealand friends are coming round to play this fantastic board game they introduced us to - I don't think I've mentioned it before but feel free to skip. It's called Settlers of Catan and it's like a combination of Risk and Monopoly (neither of which I actually like, strangely). It's much shorter to play than Monopoly though, once you've had the first game to work out how the rules go. Daniel doesn't like board games, but he thinks Settlers is brilliant, to the extent that when we happened to see a copy in a toy shop a couple of weeks ago he bought it even though it was in Italian! Well we know the rules anyway, and it's close enough to Spanish and French for us to work it out if necessary.

And speaking of Italian, I made a panforte this morning, due to being awake at the unearthly hour of six-thirty! It's a recipe I got from last year's Christmas magazine, so I don't think it's a standard traditional one. It's got apricots in it for one thing, I don't remember ever noticing apricots in panforte when I've had it in the past. I always thought it was figs. And white chocolate and macadamia nuts, which I love - mmm crunchy. If it comes out nicely I'll see about posting the recipe. This one is my practice round, as I'm planning on making a couple to take to my parents and Dan's at Xmas (my parents' oven died last year and they're waiting for the new kitchen to be built before buying a new one so any Xmas cakes they want have to come from elsewhere.) Time and energy permitting.

Feeling really zonked now - Dan's at work trying to finish something off so that the baby can come as soon as it likes - but he'll be back in about an hour so it's not worth me going back to bed.

Have a nice weekend everyone! :)
