It's unlikely to become canon, but I find your assumption that age gaps are a major problem between adults dubious. I met an extremely nice girl in 2004 when I was 40 and she 21. We've been married for over 3 years now. It happens.
I should clarify--with Spike, it's a case of too young NOW. On the actual show, there might be some trouble with a "I'm waiting until he grows up" vibe, given the target demographic. With Daring, I guess, it's that as a professor, I'm mentally unwilling to go there.
Age gaps aren't necessarily a RL issue if people are willing to deal with the ridiculous blowback and assuming that kids aren't an issue, either. A 40 year old lady--and I say this AS a lady--is going to run smack up against the problem that a 21 year old guy may think he doesn't want kids, but finds out later that he does. Well, that, and a crapton of social prejudice.
