Same weapon options as last time! No choice to make here.
STAGE 3: Scarlet Devil Castle - Underground Caves
We appear to have moved on into some partially natural cave formation! It is infested with bats.
Yes, there are bats. This hardly even bears mentioning.
I should mention something about spikes.
Normally, spikes are instakill. However, since I'm on Easy, all incoming damage is reduced to 75%. Thus, if I'm in great condition, I can just barely survive touching them once.
After a bit of wandering around in bat-ridden tunnels...
We enter a less natural-looking area!
It's worth nothing that, like any good Castlevania game, the torches and candles can be destroyed for more hearts orbs. The gravestone there looks suspicious, but doesn't actually do anything.
EXCEPT SOMETIMES. There are a few gravestones that leap out of the ground and chase after you. It's really quite alarming.
Throughout a lot of this area, these ghosts will suddenly appear around me. Annoying, but manageable.
Big smashy spike things!
I could probably use Sakuya's World to freeze them and run through, but the timing isn't very hard.
THAT THING is not nearly as dangerous as it looks. They die in one hit.
Back into caves now!
Weren't these things in one of the DS games? Well, they're big, and pretty sturdy, taking four hits and packing a decent punch with their fireballs.
Slimes!
More gravestones!
These guys are a pain. They constantly dig up rocks that fly out in a wide spread in front of them.
How do I approach safely?
I don't. I have hired help to do it for me.
Meiling can take out a gravedigger in one hit.
Water area!
Nun skulls and Merfolk, neither overly dangerous.
Water doesn't really DO much - it makes you move slower and jump higher, but that's it. There's not even much down there.
Nothing much, that is...
...EXCEPT THIS.
1UP get.
And before we can reach the boss, it's a special scene!
Komachi Onozuka
Voice:
Haruka Tomatsu again
The Sanzu River, do you need the Sanzu River?
Another strange sighting. What are you doing here?
It is my job to ferry along the souls of the departed.
Sakuya, do you need the Sanzu River?
I'm not interested in buying your river. I'm not dead yet.
You sure? Everyone dies some day, so it's a safe investment.
I... suppose so. Anyway, can you let me borrow that boat?
Here it comes! Into the Sanzu River we go!
Haah...
If you get on, I'll take you somewhere nice~
Well!
This lady seems trustworthy. Let's get on her boat.
So begins a long, arduous journey!
Falling into the river is instant death, even on Easy.
Merfolk and bats attack relentlessly as you cross.
Getting hit by enemies can knock you into the river.
During more intense moments, it can be helpful to drop a Sakuya's World to get the upper hand. It does pause the boat, too, though.
FREEDOOOM
And with NO FURTHER ADO...
It's cutscene time!
You're Saigyouji's...
Youmu Konpaku
Voice:
Ryou Hirohashi
What a strange meeting place.
Not at all. Where else would I meet you, who has one foot in the waters of the Sanzu River?
Did the person who created this place also spirit them away?
Spirit what away?
The spring, and my mistress.
Who cares?
I do, so englighten me.
I don't, so I don't intend to. Why don't you just give it your best guess?
So you really don't intend to tell me. And here I was, perfectly ready to go through peacefully.
Unlikely, with an expression like that!
BOSS BATTLESakuya VS Youmu
Third boss! This one's quite a bit harder than the last two.
Youmu opens with a pair of slashes that produce expanding walls of bullets - they're curving away, though, so I just need to outdistance them.
I'm already getting pushed into the corner, though...
Getting past her costs me some health, and so does this wall of curving bullets in all directions. She's not letting the offensive up for a second!
And she's ALREADY busting out her spellcard! I can't rest for a second, or I'm history!
I don't get a good shot of this attack, because I'm too busy running away from it like fuck.
Time to begin my counterattack!
I have precious little time after her big attack during which I can freely attack. Then, it starts again.
Making this whole battle harder is the fact that I'm waist-deep in water, slowing me down relentlessly.
Yeah, and if you try to dodge high, you'll run face-first into those.
Sometimes she gets obnoxiously high up, at which point Meiling becomes a useful way to attack.
Better shot of her ultimate attack. It goes once in each direction, starting towards you.
You may notice I'm short a life now.
ALMOST DONE
FUCK YOOUUUU
Rrgh!
It looks to me like there are still things your sword cannot cut.
Damn it...
Whether you care or not, it's time to start intending to answer my question.
If you won't tell me, I'll just have to ask your mistress directly.
