Chapter 4: Caverns of Chaos II



It's good to keep track of what different sounds mean in the distance. Slurping is the sound of a spider-type enemy creating a tile of webs.

I can't get out of this corner without coming into melee range of that thing. Do I risk fighting it up close?

A river blocks the floor! Dare I swim it?

This is the hidden awesome function of Frost Bolt. Be careful, though - if you bring more than 2000s of equipment onto an ice bridge, it'll collapse.



And then I find what the floor feeling promised! A vault.

A VAULT FULL OF SPIDERS.



Dozens of spiders of various species swarm the vault!



By alternating bolt spells and melee in strategic chokepoints...



...the vault is cleared!

Nothing too great in the lootpile, though.

This means we have come to an important choice.



The Dwarven Halls
A shortcut past the Animated Forest
Threat Level: 4/5

The Dwarven Halls are two floors of hell almost ANYTHING can spawn here, most of it is deadly, and I'm not ready for any of it. The only advantage here is the possibility of getting shit lucky.

Or I can take the other path...



...greatest surprise of all is that you are surrounded by a forest! Moments later you are even more surprised, when you notice that all the trees seem to be animated!

The Animated Forest
A huge, unnatural cavern

Special: Usually not hostile, weak VS fire

I'll be taking this route, as I have some tricks to help me navigate it.



Primarily this one! Teleport's destination is random, so I can't count on getting any closer to my goal than this.

The thing about the Animated Forest is that all of these trees are non-hostile. For the moment.

I just need to squeeze my way through.



Fortunately, thanks to that lucky teleport, I'm able to reach the far end before they start to get unruly or oppressive!



Mission complete!



Cleaning up the trees that followed me down! Not that hard when there's only four of them.

Never, EVER use fire magic on the forest floor itself - it makes the ENTIRE forest hostile to you.



Now for the trip back!



Even normally you'll sometimes encounter hostile trees in your wanderings. Best to push past them and hope the crowd leaves them behind.



Almost there...!



And done!

Time to genocide these five trees and head back to THRUNDARRRRR



Lots of dangerous monsters down here!

There are a lot of the things! They die easy, though.

It IS possible to encounter non-ogre monsters in the ogre cave, but it's rare.

Hard to take pictures of, ogre magi are by far the most dangerous thing in this dungeon.

Even hazarding some anti-ogre melee now!



And down goes the last ogre!

As a side point, I can use this place as a sort of temple of solitude now - the monster generation rate here is extremely close to zero.
